LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A letter, was read at the County meeting, on Thursday from the town clerk advising that the Mayor had inspected the water headworks, which he found to be in excellent order,, reflecting credit on the county. The Borough Council extended its thanks to the county for its effective endeavours to conserve the water supply during the recent diy weather.

Heavy mails, both inward and outward, have been handled at the local port office during the past week, and the work in the mail-room, which is no sinecure at this season of the year, has been made more difficult by lack of accommodation in which co receive and despatch mails. On several occasions it has, been necessary to unpack hampers and mailbags on the footpath outside the post office owing to the congestion in the mailroom. The inadequacy of the public office was particularly noticeable on Saturday morning last- Some twenty, people were standing in a queue awaiting attention from the officer in charge at the counter. This official was doing his best to cope with the rush at the tiny 3ft by 3ft counter window, but was woefully handicapped by lack of room. Granted that Saturday’s rush at the post office—apart from the fact that it is Christmas time —was increased by the payment of old-age and soldiers’ pensions, the congestion might well be minimised by opening the other pigeon-hole and having another coun-ter-clerk, thus affording increased counter accommodation, with advantage to the public as well as, the portal officials. A continuous rusa and steady stream of people grumbling at the delay, and lack of attenticns must'be very disconcerting to the official behind the counter who *s do’ng his best. Let us hope that before the advent of Christmas, 1924, Pa-vroa will have its new building in Normanby .Road.
