JERSEY DEMONSTRATION

AFTERNOON AT TIROHIA. At the request of the head teacher of the Tirohia school Mr E. J. Walters, one of the official Jersey demonstiators for the Thames Valley district, met the settlers and pupils of the school at Mr.Veale’s farm on Friday afternoon last for a demonstration. About thirty children and a dozen adults attended, the latter being diminished in numbers by the fact that hay-making was in full swing all round. One of Mr Veale’s cows was led in for criticism, and suited the purpose well, as she is a typical Jersey in every sense of the word. A brief history of the origin of this valuable hreed, their keep and environment on Jersey Islands, their ca-eful handling and consequent docility, led to a consideration of the chief points desirable in a Jersey cow. The advantages of good breathing organs, a good digestion, and a strong constitution were noted, and the many small items which go to make the Jersey cow the most beautiful of all qattle. A resume of the reasons why dairymen should keep Jersey cows followed, the chief of which, of course, is profit. The demonstrator then offered to reply to any. questions, and some information was given. to inquirers, after which Mr Walters thanked all present for their marked attention and complimented the pupils on their .smart answers and good behaviour —a pleasure to meet such a keen little crowd of juvenile farmers. On the motion of Mr Veale a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the demonstrator by acclamation, and with the usual courtesies a very pleasant afternoon was concluded.
