A. special meeting of the Paeroa Business Men’s Association is to be held early in January to discuss the half-holiday question. At the Borough Council meeting on Thursday last Cr. Breman moved that the Mayor’s honorarium for the year should be £75, which sum, he thought, was little enough considering the many ; calls that were made on his pociret, and the time which he had necessarily to devote to the execution of his municipal Activities. This was seconded by Cr. Edwards and carried. ' . Commencing yesterday morning a strong north-westerly wind continued throughput the day. Although the barometer has fallen since Saturday, rain has not" yet fallen, although ‘there was a slight drizzle this morning. The weather has been ideal for harvesting, but the position is becoming serious for the farmers, asi rain is badly needed to renew 1 the growth of parched pastures.

The ' Finance Committee reported I at the last Paeroa Borough Council meeting that the revenue for the month had amounted to £1326 3s Bd, and expenditure to £1135 19s 2d. The balance to the credit of the District Fund Account amounted to £986 12s 7d. It. was recommended that the 10 per cent .penalty be imposed on. all rates not paid by Monday, January 21, 1924., At the adjourned meeting p£ the Paeroa Business Men’s Association Messrs D. Nicholas, J. P. Gamble,, G.. P. de Castro, J. Hubbard, and H. M. Shand were elected the executive for the ensuing year, and Mr D. Brown auditor. At a subsequent meeting of the executive Mr W. DNicholas was elected chairman and 'Mr B. Stansfield commissioner .secretary. The following buildings applications have been received by the Borough Council during the month : JKennedy, repairs to buildings, WharfStreet ; W. Marshall, erection of shops in Belmont Road for D. McWatters ; Paeroa Tennis Club, erection of tennis pavilion, Te Aroha Road; W. M. Chamberlain, .to make additions to house of Mrs C., Holes, Thames Road ; Thames Valley Power Board, 1 addition to porch at back of their building in Belmont Road. The ap- ’ plications were granted subject tv compliance with the by-la,ws.
