IVRUA. SPORTS CLUB. Steady preparations are being made by the Hauraki Plains Athletic and Sports Cifib for its fourth annual sports meeting on January 26. The fact of the Hikutaia meeting being only three days; after should induce cQmpetitors to come from a distance. The prize money totals over £l3O. The dub’s annual picnic will be held on the sports ground on New Year’s Day. Admission will be free, and there , will <be<a comprehensive programme of r events for children. A working bee will be held on the ground on the 22nd. TOWN HALL. A long discussion on the point of whether ’there should be shops or not in the proposed town hall took place at a meeting of ratepayers called for the purpose on Wednesday evening last, but no decision was arrived' at. However, it was decided that a postal ballot of the ratepayers of the Town Board area should be held. Ballot papers will be posted bn Monday and must be returned within the week. ■NGATEA. HALL SOCIETY. The Ngatea Hall Society decided at a meeting on Monday evening last to offer the church authorities £l2O for the section adjoining the present hall site. CONCERT. Something out of the ordinary run -of.concerts was presented by a party from. Thames to a large and; appreciative in the Ngatea hall on Wednesday evening. The function was organised by a committee of Catholic Church members to form a nucleus ,of a t fund with* which to build a church in Ngatea.. and their efforts were crowned with success. A varied programme of dances- and songs were contributed in such a ..manner as to show evidence of much careful training. Miss Mavis Hayward was seen to advantange in the Geogette ballet, while the dancing of Miss Vera Butler and Miss Marjory . Coombe found much favour. Songs were contributed by Miss E. O’Carrbll, of Kopuarahi, Miss R. Phillips, Miss Taipara, Mr N. Wallace, of Patetonga, and Mr L. Mcllvride, and were all well received. An outstanding feature were the monologue by Miss E. Kelly. These fully deserved the encores they received. The concert wound up with a pot pourri of song and dance entitled “The Outlaws.’’ The accompaniments were played by Miss Coakley Miss Kelly, and Miss Fitzpatrick, while for the dance that followed Mrs Fatter,'Miss Kelly, Mrs ; Costello, and Mr N. Walace were at the piano. ’ A dainty supper was handed round about midnight, and the function was ! bro agh t -to a close about 2 am. nKEREREEHI. OBITUARY. There passed away ,at Thames Hospital on December 8, after a short illness, one of the most highly respected., Maoris of the Plains, in the ..person of Pera Hawera. For ithe past fifteen years deceased had been ~an, employee .of the Lands Department, occupying; the position of road rforeman. The representative; gathering of Government employees and settlers whp attended the funeral at -Kerepeehi, testified <to the> respect in which ,he. was held by all who whom he came in contact.
