Fine weather continued throughout the week-end, although yesterday morning the sky was overcast and a fr-’Sh north-easterly wind prevailed for a couple ’of hours, bringing a few drops of rain, but this was soon dispelled by brilliant sunshine. Rain is badly needed in all parts of the district, and although the weather has been ideal for early harvesting the pastures are beginning to feel the effects of the prolonged spell of dry weather. So far as Paeroa is concerned no rain has been recorded in the rain gauge since Friday, November 23. At a meeting of the Paeroa Public Library Committee held on Friday evening last it was decided to purchase a further supply of new books, to the value of £5. These books will be placed in circulation after the Nfew Year. There were 57 deaths in October In the Dominion from cancer in its various forms, and six deaths from diabetes.

Twelve Cornish miners have arrived at Waihi from Home under immediate engagement to the Waihi Gold Mining Company. The activities of a group of surveyors on the Plains recently have boon conducive to much discussion concerning the possible route of the Pacroa-Pokeno railway. What might be a site for a» station has been surveyed on Mr W, J. Sheen’s farm at the top of the Puh.anga canal. The area is five acres. There were 20 deaths by violent or accidental causes during October in New Zealand, Six were cases of suicide, 13 were due to accidents, and one was a case of homicide. . A special train from Thames passed through Paeroa yesterday evening, conveying the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister for Public Works and Railways, Messrs R. W. McVilley, General manager N.Z. Railways, Jones, superintending engineer to the Railway Department, H. J. Harris, district traffle manager, F. W. Furkert, Ehgineer-in-Chief and Under-Secretary, Public Works Department, and A. F. Baker, district Public Works engineer. A brief stop was made at Paeroa to pick up Mr L. May, resident Public Works engineer, who is under temporary transfer to Wellington, The Minister and his party, joined the main trunk express at Frankton Junction for Wellington. . Mrs R. B. Warren notifies by advertisement in this issue that she is commencing business in Normanby Rend, Paeroa, in premises formerly occupied by Marks’ auction mart. Mrs Warren has. been appointed sole agent in the district for R. and W. Hellaby Ltd,s small goods, and in addition she will stock cooked meats of all descriptions, pies, and condiments. The premises have been renovated throughout, and cool storage an:l sanitary safes installed, and patrons can rely on getting the best of home-cooke.d dainties under the most hygienic conditions* In a report of a farewell social held at Netherton last week to farewell Mr D. R. Anderson it was erroneously stated that Mr Anderson has been manager of the cheese factory at Netherton. This is not correct; as he was first assistant there for 13 months, and has been transferred to the Aka Aka factory to a similar position.
