TURUA TOWN BOARD.

REGULAR MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Turua Town Board was held on Wednesday Evening. There were present Commissioners J. Mules (chairman), C. Scott, F. Olsen, F. Beck, A. P. Gardiner, and J. T. Davies. The clerk. Mr J. E.. Green, was also in attendance, Mr A. C. Ansford was granted leave of absence for two months owing to illness, and a vote of sympathy was accorded him. TOWN HALL. Mr E. E. Gillman; architect, waited on' the ; board and’ showed plans and estimates of the proposed town hall. The cost of the building complete, without shop#,'would 1 be £2421 7s 7d, and'the two shops and etxension of kiW'Wpuid’cost £347 12s Id, making a total-most of £2768 19s Bd. To this would’have to' be added : architect’s fees,' furnishings -and land. The lighting would be included in the estimate. A denotation comprising Messrs S. Mercer, J. A. Bennett, and F. Truelove waited o. the Board-and probated against ratepayers’ money being used to build shops in the pro posed tp vn hail. This vould be subr'dising , l usiness to rv.'i in competition with those men who had invested money in land and buildings. The lessees of the shops would have no interest in the town; private enterprize would be preferable. Then there was no assurance that the shops would be let, as there had been an empty shop in Turua for some time. Mr J. T. Davies said that at the meeting at which the matter was first brought up Mr G. J. Walker had showed an estimate of the annual receipts. These included the rent from the shops, and the meeting haddecided to support the project. It was the idea of the Board to put up a building that would be revenueproducing. The chairman assured the deputation that the matter would be coni‘idered from the aspect raised. The wuole matter was still in the air,, and tne erection of the hail was a long way off. ~ After discussing the matter for -.some .time it was decided to place the jriuitter before a public meeting of ratepayers to be held next Wednesday. s POWER BOARDS’ ACCOUNT. n The ‘manager’ of tlie Thames Valley Power Board wrote stating that the account of £5 6s 9d was. the actual cost of making good the damage cans--1 efl by the' trees on • the Board’s property falling across the lines. Mr Beck asked if it was not thp Power Board’s duty to see that the wires were safe when erected. • The chairman said that the brane i that did the damage had been blowii ’a considerable distance from a place wl ore it was not considered-a'danger. METAL QUOTE. Messrs H. J. Trathowen and Co., -Kauaoranga,- Thames, wrote giving a quote for metal m their hoppers at the booms and delivered at Shoreland. They strongly advised that metal should be taken from Shorthand, as they had a boat suitable for 'the river, and a reliable and experienced man, The prices were 10s for screened, 9s 6d for unscreened, and 10s for chips. If delivered at Shortlam! 6d per yard more. A further letter fom the same firm stated that a man had arrived with the necessary punts, etc., and would visit, Turua pn Monday or Tuesday next. It was decided that as many members of the Board- as possible would interview him.- > ROADING LOAN. The chairman reported that he had 'interviewee’ 7 the'Cbdnty engineer, 'Who had promised to supply specifications for 'the reading loan as soon ds possible. FOOTPATH OBSTRUCTION. , It was decided that the clerk write to the ownerC a section in Waihou Street whose fence was overhanging ,the footpath a,nd request that the obstructKm should be removed. STREET LIGHTS; Mr F. Olsen asked if .it would be advisable to remove the light opposite the stable, as iat present there were three lights very close together, in hi? opinion the light would be of more use on Piako Road. It was decided to do nothing in the meantime. DATE OF MEETING. It was resolved that the r.ext meeting of the Board should be held on the second Wednesday in January, instead of the first. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling'£9 16s lOd were passed for ■ payment.
