KAIHERE. PRIVATE TENNIS COURT OPENING. The enjoyment of the 50 or so settlers who attended the opening of Mr J. O’Connor’s private tennis court on Saturday was marked by a variety of happy expressions, the result, undoubtedly, of the genial hospitality of the host, the beautiful surroundings, the good weather* the splendid playing, and the refreshments that tended to the satsifaction of the “inner man.’’ Mr J. F. Mayn, on behalf of the settlers. offered a vote of thanks to Mr O’Connor, who, in reply, thanked all for coming and stated that the court would be available for play every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and that all the settlers present were welcome. FATETONGA. SOCIAL AND DANCE. On Tuesday last a successful social and dance was held in aid of the public library funds., £7 being the net profit. Much that added to the enjoyment of the evening was a duet given by Mrs Wallace and her daughter Betty, followed by “An Old-fash-ioned Town’* by the former. Several humorous recitations were contributed by L. Gunlope which, with the aid of five novelty dances, caused much of the fun of the evening. Miss A. Burgess and Mr A. Buchanan were the winners of both the one-step and waltzing competitions, and Mr J. Garry was the winner of the “lucky spot.”
