PAEROA TENNIS CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club was held in the Central Theatre supper-rooms on Tuesday evening last. Mr R. L. Miller presided over, an attendance of about 40 members and friends. In opening the meeting Mr Miller said that it had been necessary to carry out certain legal formalities to enable the club to obtain a bank overdraft for the purpose of buying land and laying down new courts. The work was now completed and the club registered, the rules of the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club being adopted with minor adjustments to meet legal conditions. Possibly the new courts were not quite as central as could have been desired, but the speaker’thought that they possessed many advantages that would not have been obtained had a more central site been chosen. The land was of freehold tenure, and wa° mortgaged to Mr H. R. Bush. Mr Miller said that the way the club members had worked was very creditable, and as a result of their energy and enthusiasm only £6 15s had been paid away as wages. When completed the courts would present a very attractive and inviting appearance, and should be a valuable asset and a credit to Paeroa. r The annual report and balancesh a et was then read by the secretary, Mr R. B. Penlington, and after due discussion was adopted, the balancesheet being adopted subject to a final auc'it at an early date. The balance-sheet showed .the assets to be £125 2s 8d over liabilities. It was agreed that this season players should provide their own tennis balls, except in inter-dab matches, when the club would provide them free. OPENING DAY. It.was decided to hold the opening on Saturday, December 1, with a dance in the evening. The secretary said .that there was a great deal of work yet to be done on the courts, and he appealed to the members tp unite in making a special effort to carry out the work prior to the opening day.THANKS. Mr O’Neill said that on behalf of the club he wished to refer to the tremendous amount of work done on the new courts by Messrs Penlington and H. and F. Thorp. Messrs Thorp had on several occasions supplied four horses and implements, as well as labour, in addition to what they themselves had done. The gentlemen referred to had worked right through the winter, and when hampered by wet weather they had nearly lived on the courts when it was fine, and the speaker said that it was solely due to those workers’ efforts that the club, was in the fortunate position of being able to open its courts in about a fortnight’s time. The thanks of the club were also due to Mr H. R. Bush for the maimer in which he had met the club. Thanks wore also due to Messrs E. E. Gillman, A. Steedman, and J. L. Hanna for their -assistance to the club.

The guarantors were also tendered thanks for coming forward so willingly with their timely help. ,

Mr F. Thorp said that a very hearty vote of thanks was due to Mi" O’Neill for the large amount of legal work in connection with the incorporation of the club which he had carried out. LIFE MEMBERS. Mrs F. S. Budd, and Messrs Penlington and F. and H. Thorp were unanimously elected life members of the club in recognition of the valuable services rendered by them in the interests of tennis.
