Owing to inadvertently dropping a line in the advertisement of Messrs Wallace and Co. in our issue of Wednesday last, the correct meaning of the advertisement was lost. The necessary adjustment has now been made, and the attention of readers is drawn to page four, on which the advertisement appears. Sunday next being Armistice Day the office of Mattins will be sung at St. Paul’s Church at 10.30, instead of at 11, as usual. This will permit of the two minutes’ silence being observed after the . singing. ofl the Office hymn. There will be a celebration of Holy Communion a.t 8 a.m., and evensong at 7 p.m. as usual. The Finance Committee reported at last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council that the revenue during the month amounted to £349 8s 7d and the expenditure to £375 15s sd, wrich included-attached accounts. The balance to the credit of the District Fund account amounted to £796 8s Id. Mention was made of the large amount of rates outstanding, and ratepayers were asked to pay their rates as early as possbile, as there will be heavy demands on the banking account within the next few weeks.
A poll of ratepayers .within a special rating area between the Turua town area boundary and the Orongo Settlement on the proposal to borrow the sum of £4520 for the purpose of laying down as a bitumen road 125 chains of the Turua-Orongo road within the rating area was held on Wednesday last, and was carried, four votes being recorded for the proposal and none against. The poll was taken at t,he request of the settlers, of whom there are eight on the roll.
f The members of St. Paul’s Ladies Giald have arranged to hold the annual bazaar and sale of work in the Central Theatre towards the end of next week. Much time and labour have been spent in making many hundreds of articles both useful and ornamental, which will be sold at prices to fit the purses of patrons. During the evening various competitions will be held, and a musical programme has been arranged. Full particulars will be advertised on Monday next.* Attention is drawn to our advertising columns, where will be found th? revised time-table for the Kopu-O-cngo ferry that will come into operation on Monday next. Three more trips have been added to cope with the summer traffic and the timetable altered to better suit the farming community. The third of the monthly social meetings of the men ofl St. Paul’s Church was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening, and the time was pleasantly passed in social intercourse, playing cards, draughts, and other games. During the evening o. number of musical records were given on a very fine gramophone kindly ’ lent by Mr R. B. Penlington, and tjhese added greatly to the enjoyment of those present. After supper an impromptu discussion on the subject of “ Profit-sharing ” took place, and ' the views expressed proved very interesting, It was decided that at the next meeting the subject of discussion would be “Free Trade v. Protection.”
