DISTRICT NEWS.

HIKUTAIA. SOCIAL. To round off the opening of the bowling green and croquet lawn a social was held in the hall on Saturday night, when, notwithstanding the strenuous nature of the afternoon’s proceedings, a large number of dancers graced the floor, and a goodly number took part in the euchre tournament. Everything went off without the least hitch, dancing being engaged in until 12 o’clock. Good music provided by Mr M. C. Smith’s orchestra, a dainty and abundant supper, anil a floor in fine condition were the fa’ctors that made for success, as also did the efficient manner in which Mr G. H. Hannam carried out his duties as M.C. The euchre was well contested, the prizes being won by -Mrs McSweeney and Mr R. R Lowry. The supper arrangements were under the supervision of the ladies who acted as a committee during the afternoon, and who are to be highly congratulated on the excellence of their arrangements and on the foresight and acumen they displayed. The encomiums passed upon their labours will, no doubt, prove a solatium for t,he strenuous and arduous duties so well and so thoroughly performed. FARMERS’ UNION.
