Prior to the commencement of the Power Board meeting at Te Aroha yesterday the chairman (Mr F. |H. Claxton) took the opportunity of thanking the members for the work done during his recent absence -in Australia. He tendered his best thanks to Mr F. E. Flatt, who had successfully filled the position of acting chairman during his absence. Mrs R. B. Dunlop notifies by. advertisement in this . issue that she has taken over the well-known “Dolly Varden” confectionery business in Belmont Road, Paeroa. These premises have been thoroughly renovated and made attractive. Special attentino is being given to the supply of ice cream, sundaes, and summer drinks. Arrangements have been completed for direct regular supplies of fruits of all kinds, and patrons of the “Dolly Varden” can rely on obtaining the best and purest of goods* it is well known that the Thames Valley Power Board covers the. largest hydro-electricity area in New Zealand. Even so, some people imagine its large area extends farther -than it does. Considerable merriment was caused the Board members at yesterday’s meeting, when a letter was read asking for information as to when the power lines would be erected between Morcej. and Taukau. The Paeroa branch of Messrs Wallace and Co. is making a special offer to patrons who shop there during this month. A special advertisement, to this effect is to be found on page four of this issue.* At the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co’s, stqck sale at the Ngatea yards on last more than the advertised nuniber of head were yarded. At the close of the sale practically all the stock had changed hands. Beef showed a slight drop, but prices were steady. Steers brought from £7 18s to £9 17s 6d ; fat cows £8 to £9 Is, others £6 to £7 10's, backward £2 5s to £4, boners and stores £1 to 35s ; bulls £2 2s to £4 4s ; Jersey yearling heifers to £5 ; two-year-old Shorthorn heifers £4 15s ; .springing heifers up to £9.
Speaking at the N.Z. Farmers’ Union meeting at Paeroa on Friday evening last the president of the Auckland executive of the Uhion, Mr A. E. Haiiding, touched briefly on the question of the establishment of agricultural banks in New Zealand. The speaker said it had been suggested that when such banks were established a committee of farmers should be appointed in each district to deal with and superintend advances made. By this means it was hoped that; satisfaction would result, and only bona fide farmers should receive advances from the bank. The current rate Jf interest in New Zealand at present was 7 pei cent., but with agricultural bauks the settlers' would be able tp borrow money at 5 per cent. Agricultural banks were being forced into every country in the world. Such banks had been instituted in Denmark, with market success. To-day Denmark was supporting 10,006,000 people, although she was very little larger than the Auckland province. The Meat, Pool and Butter Pool would help the producers in New Zealand, but Mr Harding contended that agricultural banking ,w® s the solution of the farmers’ disabilities. Such banks could very easily be instituted in this country if the farmers would only stmid together behind the movement. Co-operation among producers was of paramount importance to their own success and well being.
