KEREPEEHI ROADING.

MEETING OF RATEPAYERS. LARGE SCHEME APPROVED. A meeting of ratepayers of the Kerepeehi riding was held in the hall on Saturday afternoon to further consider matters in connection with the permanent * roading scheme for the riding. Although a notice had been posted to every ratepayers only about a dozen attended the meeting. In the absence of the chairman of the Ratepayers’ Association Mr G. Mclntosh occupied the chair. The county clerk, Mr E. Walton, and the riding member. Cr. J. H. Nicholson, were present by invitation. For the benefit of those persons who had not been present at the previous meeting Mr Walton gave the engineer’s estimates and explained the position in regard to the rating area. He said that the rates for the comprehensive scheme would b'e about equal to those required should the riding be divided into small rating areas to deal with separate roads. In reply to Mr D. J. Williams the chairman and Mr Walton said that it would be quite in order for the meeting to pass a resolution asking the Council to take a poll of ratepayers Mr H. Hpff asked several questions in regard to township sections. Mr Waitop said that Government land could not be rated until it was settled, when it automatically be'eame liable. Township sections would always pay more rates than farm lands. If at any time the townspeople desired to have the side streets in the township attended to they would have to form a rating area and raise a loan. They should ask the Lands Department to metal the roads. The sections had been purchased knowing that the roads were of clay. The cost of metalling should be reckoned on to the cost of the sections. Under the proposed scheme the farm lands would contribute towards the cost of the main roads in the .township. The rate on the town sections would, therefore, be less than if the townspeople went on their own to do the main roads. Mr A. S. Fisher moved and Mr E. J. Williams seconded: (1) That this meeting resolve to ask the County Council to put before the ratepayers of the Kerepeehi riding a proposal for a loan to lay down the following roads in the riding as bitumen roads : Wharepoa-Kerepeehi Road from Tuura riding boundary to Kerepeehi wharf; Pekapeka and Kaik'ahu Roads, Wairau Road, Kopuarahi-Kerepeehi Rond from Horahia riding boundary to Innes’ corner, that part of the Tu-rua-Netherton main road in the Kerepeehi riding. (2) That the special rating area be that part of the riding north and east of the Awaiti Stream, less the blocks known as Te Awaiti 2CI, 2C2, 2C3, and ID2. Mr W. Herkt asked if it would be advisable to cut out the Wairau road. Mr Bagnall said that the Council would not agree to raising a loan over the whole of the riding to do some of the rpads. Mr H. Hoff supported the scheme, but objected to the non-inclusion cf the township by roads. The motion was put and carried unanimously. in reply to Mr Williams Mr Walton said that there was nothing to prevent the money now available being spent on Pekapeka Road. When the poll for the scheme was carried it would be necessary to submit proposals to .the Public Works Department together with an application for a subsidy. These would be considered An the month of May. Mr A. S. Williams moved that the Council be asked to go on with the work as soon after the poll was carried as was possible. Seconded by Mr W. E. Chick and carried. In reply to Mr Pearce Cr. Nicholson , sa id that at the next meeting of the Council he would bring up rhe matter of discing Pekapeka Road. He would interview the> engineer immediately and see if something could be done at once. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mr Walton and Mr Nicholson for attending.
