PAEROA CRICKET CLUB.

ANNUAL meeting. The annual meeting of the Paeroa Cricket Club was held in the Fire Brigade Shed on Thursday evening last, when there was a fair attendance of cricket enthusiasts. Mr H. M. Shand occupied the chair. Extracts from the annual report state that the membership for the past season numbered 18, a decrease fro?n the previous season. During the season the Club was unfortunate in losing three of its most active members. The Club’s most serious loss was caused by the lamentable deata of Mr A. E. Fielder, who had been president and umpire for a number of years. The club captain. Mr P. C. Fu-ley, resigned early in t,he season, owing to his leaving the district, and M’ - L, E. Martin followed soon atferwards. Thus the Club’s standard of cricket suffered severely. The Club extends its thanks to. the Domain Board for t,he use of the ground, and is looking forward to the time when the long-promised domain impiiovemwts are put in hand. MATCHES. ;■ Throughout the season the Club ex- ■ perienced a difficulty in arranging matches with outside clubs. Karangahake and Kopuarahi clubs were formed last season, and each put a ' team in the field, with the result that some interesting matches were played, the local club proving victorious on each occasion. Of the 15 matches played last season Paeroa won 5, drew 3, and lost 7. In two of the three games drawn Paeroa was well in the lead, but owing to rain, and shortness of time, the games had to be abandoned unfinished. BOWLING. The bowling was not up to last season’s standard. Haskell proved to be the best bowler of the season, coming out on top with an average of'-one wicket for 4.2 runs, taking 32 wickets for 135 for the season. C. Farrpw came next with an average •f one for 5.1 runs, taking 27 wickets for 140 runs. BATTING. In the batting Furley topped the averages with 37, although he left before the season was finished. Mar- ■ tin gained second honours with an average of 14.9. The fielding on the whole was very good, considering the rough nature of the ground. Ro 1 ton acquitted himself very creditably behind the stumps. W. Smith, although only a young player, proved very keen and ■ nippy in the field, and accounted for eleven catches during the season. , AN ASSOCIATION. Ari effort was made to form a Paeroa Cricket Association, and also a Goldfields Association comprising Thames, Te Aroha, Waihi, and Paeroa, but the project, was not well received. . FINANCE. The total receipts for the year . rmounted to.£lB Is 9d, including sub- . scriptions amounting to £l7 3s 6d ; and the expenditure was £lB 8s 7d, of which £ll 6s lOd was spent in purchasing additional gear. The credit balance at the beginning of the year was £1 Is 3d, and the club finished up the season with a small credit balance. OFFICERS. The election of officers for the 1923-24 season resulted as follows - Patron, Mr W. Marshall; president, Mr H; E. Butler ; captain, Mr H. M. Shand ; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. H.
