FANCY DRESS BALL.
♦— CHILDREN’S EVENT AT TURUA. Friday night last was a children’s night out at Turua, when there eventuated the long-looked-forward-to fancy dress ball organised by the ladies of the Anglican Church for the children of the district. The evening will long be remembered by young and old as probably the most) successful function that has eve’ been held in the Victoria Hall. For months past a committee comprising Mesdames Bell, Stevens, Luke Scott, Robinson, Brown, Goodsell and Walker and Miss Mules have been training the children how to dance, and their efforts were amply rewarded by the enthusiasm in Which the litUlje ones entered into the spirit of carnival. No 1 doubt the fact that practically all were in fancy dress tended to increase the gaiety. I The scene was a brilliant one, the j va”iegated colours of the costumes blending with the effective decorative scheme, forming a bright spectacle. A. feature of the evening was the dancing of the Sir Roger de Coverley. The music, was supplied by the Turua orchestral party and by MesdameS Wells, Goodsell, Mules, and Wailker. The problem of the costume judges —Mrs D. Allan, Miss Gibb, and Miss White—must have been a difficult one. The six children chosen as prize winners were :• —Giris : Under 8 years, Lilly Clotworthy, Cobweb ; over 8, Alice Truelove, Spanish dancer; most original costume, Dorothy Pentecost, Basket of Fruit. Boys : Under 8, Ernest Griffiths, Boy Blue ; over 8, Andrew Stewart, Dutch Boy; most original, Arthur Lord, bag of flour. The duties of M.C. were carried by Master Wilson Davies, who wore the co q tume of Robin Hood. The ball commenced a little after 7.30 p.m., and continued tiilj 10.30, when the adults, about 80 couples, were permitted to dance. The function was also a great financial success, and the church building fund will benefit to tjlie extent of about £27. 10s. Great credit is due •to the ladies’ committee for the work done for the cause.
