YOUNG CITIZENS' LEAGUE.

(To the Editor). Sir,— Upon reading your article in the "Gazette" of the 24th concerning the Young Citizens’ League, I determined to express my views on the subject. Messrs Cutten and Stebbing were invited to this district by the Karangahake people concerned for the express purpose of initiating about forty children candidates, who ha :1 been preparing for some time for initiation into this excellent league ; not, as is evidently supposed, to visit Paeroa to explain matters appertaining to the League to the people interested. They were met at Paeroa by’ two Karangahake teachers and His Worship the Mayor of Paeroa, who wa? most kindly attentive to the two gentlemen during their stay. Of course, whilst awaiting the hour arranged for the Karangahake ceremony, it was only furthering the interests of the League to call meetings at Paeroa* and visit the school and staff in order to explain its motives and to endeavour to new members; I believe a branch of the League will now be formed at Paeroa, which fact will be for the betterment of the town, but whilst wishing it every possible success it is only fair to ask the new branch to remember that the people of Karangahake were the first (in this district.) in the field of child, and thus State, improvement. Great credit and thanks are due to Messrs Cutten and Stebbing, who devoted so much pf their valuable time to the children of the district. Mr Stebbing, whose sterling worth is not recognised as much as it might be, is a man jvho hap reared a family and who'now makes child improvement his life work. He is not a wealthy man, but God will not allow such deeds as his to go unpraised, so he will be wealthy in a spiritual sense and the world will be be’ter for his having lived. He and Mr Cutten are truly citizens whose example one would be wise to follow. Let us hope that the Young Citizens League will help to produce such men as these.
