GOLF.

CLOSING DAY. The official closing for the season of the Paeroa Golf Club was held on Saturday afternoon on the local links. Despite the rather boisterous weather conditions a large number of members and their friends attended, and an enjoyable afternoon was spent. Various competitions were held during the afternoon, and were entered into with zest by the members. At the conclusion of the competitions a delicious afternoon tea was served by the lady member*, of the Club, immediately followed by the presentation of trophies/ won that afternoon, and during .the season. The Club’s vice-presi-dent, Mr R. L. Miller, .apologised for the unavoidable absence of the president, Dr. Smith- 1® addressing the gathering, Mr Miller said that the past season had been a ver Y disappointing one from a golfer’s point of view. The Club had been very unfortunate as regards weather conditions, it being late in August before anything like good weather was enjoyed. The giowth of grass on the links had been rapid, and just when a lot of work was required to be done the lawn-mower wap broken, causing a further delay in putting*the links in good order. He wished to thank the members for their help and cheerfulness under adverse circumstances during .the season, for the work of the committee had been considerably lightened by the members heln and co-operation, and he trusted that next year things generally would be brighter and better. Continuing, Mr Miller said that m ,the marches against the Thames an(l Waihi clubs the local club had been decisively beaten, although the games were closely contested, and he would urge members to devote as much time as possible to practice. The winter tournament had been well received, but owing to the weti weather it had resulted in a small financial loss. He wished,, on behalf of the club, to express appreciation to the ladies for their ministrations, on tournament day especially. Despite the dampness and mud the ladies worked heroically, and did much towards putting the members in a good humour, thereby turning the tournament from a failure into the success that it wasMr Miller said that it was very pleasing to record the great achievements of “Bricky” Budd during the season, and he felt it wafe quite safe to predict that before long this young player would rank among the Dominion’s best golfers. In conclusion he wished the club every success for next season. The following is the list of trophy winners for the past season:— Long Drive.—Men, W. R- Dalqs, presented by Mr E. W.
