HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY
INSPECTOR’S REPORT. At the last meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council, the inpe :tor, Mr W. J. Clare, presented his report to the Council as follows Straying stock save caused a lot of trouble. Since my last report a number have been impounded, and all complaints received have been attended to as far as possible. I would like to point out to your council the trouble one has in driving stock along the roads with so many of the owners of land fronting on the road leaving their gates, open either to enable their own stock to wander on the roads or to be a nuisance to drovers of stock. Pigs on Drains. —Where this has come under my notice I have served notices on the owners and instructed the offenders to repair all damage. Pigs have damaged the roads and drains very badly on the Kaihere Road in one particular place, and up to the present I have been unable to trace the owners. Dead Stock.—-I have served notices on a number of settlers re the above, and all have been buried with the exception of one that is on a farm at Waitakaruru about two chains from the Miranda Road. This beast is dead on Mr Peter’s farm, and I served him with a notice on the 12th September, and up to a day or two ago the matter had not been attended to. Vehicle License.—A small amount in fees has been collected during the month, and the ones plying for hire who up to the present have not paid have been served with notices asking them to comply with the request. I have received complaints about the drainage from cowsheds into road drains, and I have had an interview with the owners and they have promised to abate the nuisance. During the month 1(15 dogs have been registered, bringing the total to date to 714. I have' made arrangements with one of the local carpenters to make a wooden top and cover up a well at Kerepeehi. I have seen the party on Newman’s Road re his extension of a cowshed that was left in my hands to deal with, and satisfactory arrangements were made. A settler on Fisher Road, Netherton, has also erected a cowshed about six chains from the road and 1% chains from a boundary fence. After having an interview with Mr McMillan about the matter, he informed me that his section had only one chain frontage to the road, and although he has erected the shed six chains from the road the section is only about five chains wide where the shed is erected. I ask your Council’s ruling on this matter. County Houses. — I am pleased to report that the county house at Waitakaruru was completed on September 20 with the exception of a few small details that have since been attended to. Surfaceman Hamblin shifted and took possession on September 12. . The pound fencing and erection of gates are near completion. The contract for the house at Ngatea was completed with the exception of a few small details on October 1. and Mr Costello took possession on September 29. Council Offices.—The contractor informs me that he intends to make a beginning on Wednesday next, 10th inst., and I have also arranged with him to shift the present office lo make room for the new buildings. As requested, I have inspected the Waitakaruru saleyards, and I will oe inspecting the Turua saleyards on the Bth inst. and will forward my report on same at a later date. Building Permits.—Permits to the value of £3OOO have been issued during the month, and I have some on hand of which I cannot approve until further information is received. There are a few who have erected buildings and have promised to supply me with a permit and up to the present have not done . so. IL the permits are not supplied within a short time I intend to hand all the offenders’ names to your Council. In concluding my report I wish to state that I have visited all parts of the county during the month, and I have found that it is very hard to keep pace with all the complaints received. Where I have not been able to attend I have sent notices where required.
