NGAHINA BRIDGE.

WAGES OF BBIDGEKEEPEB. BOROUGH ASKED TO CONTRIBUTE. A letter was read at the Paeroa Borough Council meeting last evening from the Ohinemuri County Council, in which it was asked if the Council would be prepared to make some contribution annually towards the wages of the bridgekeeper of the Ngahnia bridge. It was pointed out that the wages, amounting to £l2O, was paid by the Ohinemuri County Council and the Hauraki Plains County Council, and as a considerable proportion of the goods brought up the river were tor the up-country district, and beyord the area of the County, a contribution would be very acceptable. Cr. Silcock moved the following resolution : “That this council cannot admit the principle that it should contribute to the cost tor the opening of the Ngahina bridge because ships pass through with goods tor Paeroa, and would point out that, bn that principle it might be asked to contribute to any similar expense at any point lower down the river. This would also apply to. the county if bridges are erected lower down than the county boundary. We would also point out that an effort i 3 being made by this council and the Chamber of Commerce to get the Ngahina wharf used, thereby obviating the necessity to come through the bridge with goods for Paeroa, but this Council is quite prepared to consider any further representations which the County Council may desire to make.” Cr. Silcock said that the Northern Company was at present negotiating with the Public Works Department for the use of the Ngahina wharf, anl he had every reason to believe that the present wharf would not be used by the company’s steamers very much longer. The motion was seconded by the Mayor and carried.
