A general store is at present being erected at Kerepeehi. In a letter from a business man in Brisbane it is stated that on the whole, the crushing of this season’s sugar cane at the mills in Queensland has been attended with little trouble in respect to labour. Crushing is now in full swing, but at the South Johnstone mill the workers refused to operate overtime, as provided in the award. Their action means that the crushing capacity of the mill will be reduced by about 200 tons of cane weekly, which will unduly prolong the season in that district. At Mulgrave a series of cane fires of a serious nature was experienced, and it is stated that there was conclusive evidence of incendiarism. In most of the canegrowing districts of the State recent rains had greatly improved the prospects for next season. Further downpours will be necessary, but it is satisfactory even at this stage to learn that the new plants are faring well.
