BOWLING.
PLAY BY ELECTRIC LIGHT. INNOVATION FAVOURED. A general meeting of the Paeroa Bowling Club was held in the Central Theatre supper room on Thursday. M’’ W. Power, president, occupied the chair, and presided over an attendance of over 40 members. The meeting was called to consider a report presented by a sub-committee, comprising Messrs Power, Edwards, and G. H. Taylor, with reference to the installation of electric light on the bowling green. The report was read by the secretary, Mr G. H. Taylor, as follows :— “Your sub-committee have carefully considered the above matter, and to assist them in their deliberations have discussed the matter with the acting-chairman and the engineer of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board. We have also consulted with Messrs Hayward Bros., and find that the tender submitted by them, and also their suggested method of lighting the green, appears to be the most satisfactory, “The proposal favoured and recommended by your sub committee is to instal nine (9) lights of 600’C.p, in three (3) rows of three (3) lights each, each row separately controlled. The price quoted by Messrs Hayward Bros, for this work is £5l 15s, with £7 10s extra for installing three lights in the pavilion. There will be an extra charge payable to the Power Board for carrying the wires from the Board’s line to the pavilion. We consider that the whole work will cost approximately £65, “We recommend: (1) That a deputation be appointed to wait on the Domain Board with the object of getting that body to pay for the installation of the light; (2) that the sum of one shilling be charged to each player for each night he uses the green; (3) that the Bowling Club undertake to collect the fees for the Domain Board and endeavour to arrange with that body for a percentage of the fees collected, the club to look after the lighting, etc., of the green. “Your sub-committee anticipate that a number of non-members will avail themselves of the opportunity of using the green at night-time, and fear that there will be a shortage of bowls for these players. This is a matter which the club will have to consider if what we anticipate materialises.” Mr E. Edwards .said that the Domain Board was to be asked to instal the lights. That body would then receive .the amount collected at the rate of 75 per cent., the club to retain 25 per cent.
The chairman said that out of the 75 per cent, the Domain Board was to be asked to provide free lighting. The cost of the lights had been estimated at 2s per hour for the nine lights. It was thought that if each player only played once a week, even then there would be a fair margin of profit for both parties. In answer to Mr Le Cocq Mr Edwards said that nothing definite could be done until the deputation had waited on the Domain Board. The secretary said that it was safe to estimate that the lighted greens would be availed of for at least 16 weeks in the year. He was of the opinion that by installing electric lights on the green it would be the means of obtaining" the interest of the Borough Council and Domain Board in the club.
Mr W. H. Taylor asked if the night playing on the rinks would not increase the charges for the upkeep of the green,. The chairman said that that point would have to be taken into consideration. Ip answer to Mr de Castro Mr Edwards said that Is per night would mean that play would be confined to definite hours. Mr Flatt said that the Power Board would .reduce the cost of the power considerably if the club was prepared to have power when the peak load was on the down-grade. That would be about 7 p.m. The Te Aroha club took "power from 7.30 to 10 o’clock. The members of tha,t club were charged is per player for 21 heads in a game. He suggested that, a deputation should wait on the power Board and lay the suggestions of the club before it, and he felt sure the deputation would be received sympathetically. The chairman said that if all the lights were used the play on the green could be reversed. It was suggested that separate switches should be installed. Mr de Castro asked if the club intended applying for a flat rate or so much a unit. The chairman replied that it would be a matter for the Power Board and Domain Board to decide. Mr Edwards said that the Power Board engineer had suggested that a meter should be Installed, and the current used only during restricted hours. -The cost for lighting would then be very much less. Mr Say asked what would be the position if the lighting of the green proved a failure. Mr Edwards said that if the members agreed- to go on with the installation it had been suggested that each member should undertake to guarantee 10s a year- He thought that there was very little likelihood of a failure. Mr W. H. Taylor said that the guarantee should be given as from the club, and not from each individual member. Mr Edwards agreed, and added that members should sign the guarantee and hand it tp the club. After further discussion the following proposition was moved by Mr B. Edwards and seconded by Mr Busby. “That the report as read be adopted, with the addition of the amendment that the Club guarantee to the Borough Council for a period of five years a revenue of £l5 over the amount of cost of current consumed." The resolution was carried. DELEGATES TO COUNCIL. It. was decided that the .sub committeo comprising the president, secretary, and Mr Edwards be appointed delegates to wait on the Borough
Council with reference to the installation. COLLECTOR OF FEES. - Mr de Castro moved that a man appointed, and given full playing* rights as a club member, to collect // all fees and attend .to the lighting of j the green. , . Seconded by Mr Busby and carried. ■ i TOURNAMENT ARRANGEMENTS, j " — - The following arrangements were./ made in connection with the different / tournaments for the season:— - ■ CLOTHIER SHIELD. j It was decided that the Paeroa Bowling Club should adhere to its.; former decision to approve pf the recommendations of the delegates at its meeting on September 8. It was agreed that the Goldfields tournament for the Clothier Shield and Stars should be played in Paeroa and Te Aroha alternatively. In the event of the majority of the other clubs in the association wishing to have the tournament held at Matamata,. the club would agree to the alteration." PREFERENCE OF PLAYERS, In the event of there not being enough players to make np a teanr for the tournament it was that the Clothier shield players* 1 should have preference over the Goldfields Stars holders. GOLDFIELDS STARS. | With reference to the Goldfields Stars competitions it was decided that the Club was quite in favour of. the “rota” system, as was submitted by the delegates at the last annual meeting. It was agreed that only: one challenge should be made by each club during the year. SOUTH AUCKLAND DELEGATE. The matter of electing a second, delegate to the South Auckland Rowling Centre was deferred until: the ; holding of the South Auckland tournament.
