PLAINS DRAINAGE.

PROPOSED EXTENDED AREA. meeting of delegates. A meeting of the delegates elected to further the proposed Drainage Board was held on Saturday afternoon. There were present Messrs A. Rogers (chairman), W. E. Hale, J, CMiller, W. McDuff, J. McKercher, and W. E. G. Willy (secretary)- Five settlers of Horahia were also present. The chairman said that the settlers were prepared to form a drainage boar-d and take over control fipm the Government provided certain necessary work was done by the Lands Department. The Minister and the Under Secretary for Lands would be in the district shortly and it was for the meeting to decide what requests should be laid before them. The requirements for the whole of the area were discussed, and it was deieded that the following would be a just and fair demand:— As the floodgate at the end of the boundary drain between the Ngataipua Block and the H.P. drainage area had never- worked, and never would work, a cut to be made across the Maioro block to the river. The outlet at the end of the Kopuarahi factory drain be increased to double the capacity to deal with the enormous area draining into it. One of the flood-gates near the Shelly Beach wharf to be reopened to drain the roadside drain, also the one at. the end of the Bond-O’Carroll drain. This drain to be continued to the Kopua-r’ahi-Orongo road to relieve the Kopuarahi wharf outlet. The stopbank near the Shelly Beach wharf to be protected where it is being undermined by the river. The end of the Kopuarahi outlet, to be protected by piles. The wooden flood-gate at the back of McMillan’s to be replaced by a concrete one. The capacity of the floodgate at Bond’s Wharf to be doubled. A culvert at the corner of the piakw-Kopuarahi-Kerepeehi road, and the roadside drain blocked t divert the water from Piako Rbad down the shell bank drain. -AS the area south of Bond’s wharf was not .stop-banked and had no outlets, yet had been rated, a flood-gate was required at the end of the drain between Green's and Sloan’s with a view to extending this drain to relieve the Kopuarahi-Kerepeehi road drain. A flood-gate to be installed at the blind- end of the Horahia Road north side drain, as this drains the Kopuarahi-Kerepeehi road drains. The wooden flood-gate between Messrs McQuarters’ and Johnstone’s to e replaced with a concrete one and the drain cleaned to the original depth. The flood-gate between the Ngatea bridge and. Johnstone’s wharf to be improved.' The outlet at the south side of the Orchard East road to be increased to double the capacity. The delegates from the Kerepeehi area wete not present at the meeting, so the requirements of that district could not be ascertained.
