HIGHWAYS DISTRICTS
EIGHTEEN ABEAS IN DOMINION. MAIN ROADS THE FIRST DUTY. At a meeting in Wellington of the Main Highways Board on Wednesday last the division of the Dominion into eighteen districts was determined. The No. 2 district comprises Manukau, Franklin, Waikato, Raglan, Wt'ipa, Coromandel, Thames, Hauraki Plains, Ohinemuri, Piako, and Matamat a counties, A number of nominations have been received for appointment to District Highways Councils, which will include an engineer, officer of the Public Works Department, and a nominee of each county council whose district is in the highways district. The chairman, Mr F. W. Furkert, Undersecretary and Engineer-in-Chief, was empowered to make appointments. The declaration of main highways will be the first business of district councils, who, in making their recommendations, are to be guided by considerations as to whether reads catty through as well as local traffic, connect large centres of population, and carry traffic to and from seaports and railway centres. The Board recommends that tallies of traffic be taken.
Representations have been made by the Board to the Government relative to the crediting of the Highways Fend with duty paid in respect of tyres imported as part of motor vehicles. The Government’s reply indicated that such an allocation could not be made this year, as, if suca were done, it would be necessary to adjust the revenue accounts, but the matter would be favourably considered at the conclusion of the present financial year,
