WORKS IN THE BOROUGH
MONTHLY REPORTS. The fololiwng reports were received at the Paeroa Borough Council meeting on Thursday last:-— WORKS COMMITTEE. “ During the month the work done by the staff has been general maintenance. “We recommend that as far as possible the work of cleaning drains be continued during the coming month, so that the public health may be protected during the coming hot weather. In this connection we consider it our duty to call attention to .the fact that very few connections are being made to the sewerage system, and the serious evil of sewage laying in the open drains is a danger which must no longer be tolerated where the sewers have been installed, especially in view of the fact that over £20,000 has been spent for the express purpose of remedying this state of affairs. The health inspector has complained strongly about this matter, and has asked that steps he taken by the Council tp compel property owners to connect their sewage to the sewerage system. We suggest that the time has now arrived when this should be done, and ask the Council to authorise the town clerk .to take the necessary steps to compel owners to connect up forthwith, Itmay be found that some people will be unable to find the necssary money, and we suggest that any who may need assistance should acquaint the town clerk, so that the Council may consider the position, and, if necessary, ,to do something to assist. “Re the Drain from Puke Road by Whitmore’s Boundary.—Mr Charlesworth has reported that Mr Wilson is prepared to donate £5, and he undertakes to find a further £5 and to construct a drain to the foreman’s approval from Puke Road to Coronation Street. The Ohinemuri County have offered to contribute £l5, and their engineer, will take levels and assist our foreman to decide exactly what should be done. As this is necessary work we recommend that tenders be called immediately Mr Charlesworth gets the £lO contribution paid in. “We recommend that prices be obtained for cutting the gorse on Primrose Hill and the work proceeded with immediately. “The borough engineers, Messrs .Gannon and Worley,, were in Paeroa on August 17, and met your committee. Sewerage and roading proposals were very fully gone into and complete plans, specifications, estimates, and report have now been definitely promised by the end of next week, and we suggest that a special meeting of the whole Council in committee be held as soon as these are received in order that the work may be le.t early enough to enable advantage to be taken of the fine weather. “In reference to Mr Clarke’s application for metalling road to his properay we have to report that the foreman’s estimate for this work is £3O. We recommend that when funds are available this matter have the favourable consideration of the Council, provided Mr Clarke pays in the pmount of his offer. "The work on footpaths is hampered by the difficulty in securing suitable gravel, and at present we do not know of any supply ether than that on the site of the old Extraction Works, but it is intended to do the paths suggested by the foreman forthwith.” FIRE STATION COMMITTEE. “As the Council is aware a clause in the Washing-up Bill vested the land required in the Borough. Council for municipal purposes, and the committee has authorsied the contractors to proceed with the building. The contractors have been very considerate in tliis matter and have me.t the Council most fairly in the difficulties that have arisen. “ A price was obtained for the erection of a dressing-room; 21ft by 10ft,. with a showen bath provision, and also a public urinal at the rear of .the building. The price was £lOB,. which was accepted by the committee. This should provide a much-needed convenience. The Rugby Union has agreed to subscribe at least £2O towards the erection of the dressingroom, etc. “We recommend that the section be fenced in, so that it may be used for yard purposes and save the present rental of 6s per week for shed and yard. ‘We have had the site surveyed and a plan is filed in the office. FOREMAN’S REPORT. “The work for the past month has been mostly in the nature of maintenance work,, metalling, cleaning drains, etc. The following roads have been patched wih metal: Fraser, Willoughby, Wood, Normanby Road, Paeroa-Karangahake, and Rye Lane. I had three loads of metal put on the Hill Street end of Coronation Street, which was in a bad state. The following drains have been deepened and all the fall available taken up. The pipes in Belmont Road and Seymour Street have been cleaned, and also the water in Rye Lane has been given an outlet and is now satisfactory. The drain pipes running from Willoughby Street were blocked owing to willow roots growing in them, so I have had same cleaned and they are now carrying drainage I let the Opatito and George Street drains, also a few chains of drain In Junction Road, to be cleaned to Mr T. Chapman at 3s per chain. “The crossing from Normanby Road to Thorp Street has been attended to, an! we have had the old bridge in Bradley Street-Station ROad crossing taken up and pipes put in its place. I would recommend that the drain in Junction Road from the river to the railway station be cleaned. “ We have had 142 yards of metal and y6ds of spawls during the month. “The estimated cost of the road into Mr Clarke’s property is £3O. “The work I recommend doing during the coming month is cleaning Princes Street, Cassrels Street, and Normanby Road drains, and renew Stjitipn road footpath and gravel from [
opposite Quarry Road to Thames Road ; also Thames Road footpati from Station Road to culvert on Thames Road, and cleaning drain at the back of the Corbett Street properties. alongside the Domain,”
