NGATEA SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the High School committee was held on Wednesday evening. _ The secretary of the Education Board wrote stating that as a rule the Board did not supply memorial, tablets to schools; In view, however, of the fact that the residents oi Ngatea had voted their memorial fund, to which they had so liberally subscribed, towards the cost of erecting a room for the accommodation of the high school pupils, .the Board was prepared to grant the reasonable cost of a memorial tablet for the school. Before definitely committing itself a detailed estimate of the cost was required. After a little discussion Mr E. Walton moved that an advertisement, be inserted in the “Gazette’’ inviting people to notify the school committee of the names of men who left •the district for the war. This was seconded by Mr Clare and carried. The headmaster, Mr N. J. Crabbe, reported t,hat the number on the roll at present was 98 in the primary division and 15 in the secondary. The the attendance during August was : Primary 70.8, secondary 10-6, During the month Mr R. J. Phelan, the secondary assistant, relinquished his duties, and his place was taken by Mr H. L. Kidd. The trees have been shifted and the paddock to be levelled is now ready for the plough. Work has also been started with the object of making an approach to the new horse paddock. It was decided to hold a working bee, and arrangements were left in the hands of Mr Clare. Mr Clare reported that the cost of a post and rail fence for the front of a section would be £lB 19s, and it was decided to have the fence erected.. Mr Walton moved, and Mr McDuff seconded, that the secretary write to the Education Board pointing out that nothing had been done with regard to the provision of a horse paddock. It was pointed out that a number of children had received inquries by being jambed in doors. It was decided to ask that more supervision be exercised.
