TURUA.
MEETING OF TOWN BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Turua Town Board was held on Wednesday evening, the chairman, Mr J. Mules, presiding over the following : Commissioners C. Ansford, C. Scott, F. Bock, F. Olsen, A. P. Gardiner, and J. T. Davies. 'The clerk, Mr J. E. Green, was plso present. GOVERNMENT HOUSING SCHEME. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote forwarding amendments to the Finance Act in respect, to advances for the erection of workers’ dwellings. —Received. CLAIM FOR WAGES. C. Taylor (Netherton) and D. Kerr (Paeroa) applied for wages aillegedly due to them by the Board for work done with the county roller in the Board's area. Members expressed a doubt as to whetner these men were council employees and therefore should be paid by the council., Tt was decided to ascertain the position from the county council and pass the account for payment if the Board was liable. RECREATION GROUND. Counsel to the Municipal Association of New Zealland wrote forwarding an opinion on the power to contribute to recreation grounds. The chairman said that this referred to the £lO donated some time ago. Apparently the Board had no authority to so contribute, and members might have to put their hands in their pockets. There might, however, be a means of overcoming this if the recreation ground became vested in the Town Board. He pointed out that the recreation ground could not be transferred till a certain road was dedicated. It was decided, on .the motion of Mr Gardiner, seconded by Mr Mule.',, to defer the question qntil the conference with the County Council, when the matter of the dedication would be discussed. ? DONATION. It was decidedjt,o write and thank Mr R. W. Bagnall for donating 10 yards of metal to the Board. The metal had been placed on the main road. STRAYING CATTLE. Mr Gardiner moved,, and Mr Olsen seconded, that an advertisement oc inserted in the local papers calling applications for the position of ranger. ROADING LOAN. The position between the Board and the County Council in reference tP t,he expenditure of the loan that has been authorised to be raised for the purpose of laying down bitvmen roads in the Board’s area was discussed in committee. It was decided that the whole Board be a committee to discuss the matter with the County Council as goon as possible. It was decided 'that the width of Hanraki Road from the northern boundary of the Board’s district to the Willow Drain be increased to 14ft if this could be done with the money available. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £l2 12s 7d were passed for payment. SOCIAL CLUB. At a public meeting held in the Victoria Hall, Turua, on Tuesday it was enthusiastically decided to form a voung men’s social club for the purpose of promoting sport and amusements in the district. The following officers were appointed : Patron, Mr T. W. Rhodes, M.P.; president, Mr A. Martin; vice-presi-dent, Mr H. Brown ; secretary, Mr J. A. Bennett; treasurer, Rev. J. M. Beaufort; committee, Messrs F. Truelove, J. Thrupp, D. Hill, K. Fox, L. McCoid, V-i, Cassin, A. Walker, GJohnson, and A. P. Gardiner. Thirtythree members were enrolled. It was decided to apply to a similar club for a copy of suitable rules. A committee meeting would be held weekly,, on Monday evenings. It was suggested that dances, etc., be hehl for the purpose of raising funds. Also that debates and boxing tournaments should be promoted, and that the club keep in view the proposal tp purchase a section of land for the purpose of erecting club rooms and training quarters.
