PLAINS WATER SUPPLY.

COUNTY COUNCIL PARTICULARSENGINEER’S TERMS ACCEPTED. The following particulars were supplied by the Hauraki Plains County Clerk to Mr Ek F. Adams,, civil engineer. in connection with the Plains water supply, upon which Mr Adams has been engaged to report:— “What is wanted is a definite and clear water supply layout, with dimensions of mains and method of handling the supply. “You are to have a free hand in suggesting the area to be served by each and all the streams hereinafter mentioned. “The Council first of all waints the .streams on the western hills from the Waitakaruru stream to the Waikaka stream, inclusive, investigated, and if as a result thereof any one or more are found unsuitable, whether from nature or quantity of water, then nothing further is to be done in respect of such unsuitable streams, but the further requirements are to be restricted tp those streams found suitable. If the ones found suitable do not permit of the scheme (hereinafter mentioned) as a whole, then the report as to a scheme for the whole area is to be abandoned. Subject to the last paragraph,, my Coun.il wants you to investigate and calculate the quantity of water available from each of the aboyementioned streams. “If possible, my Council wants to provide for a supply of v. ater; pure enough for domestic purposes, and if that is not available, then for a supply for stock only. “A report is required as for a separate scheme for each stream, showing the area west of the Piako River capable of being supplied,, th® kest method of dealing with the supply (whether by gravitation or pumping), and the cost thereof. A further report (subject as above) for the whole of the area west of the Piako as one scheme. "An estimate of the time required to carry out the construction in each case. “To consider and advise on the suggestion that in one or more areas the farmers, should provide storage on their farms for holding water for* their herds. To consider and include in the report the kind of pipe suitable in view of the mineral substances in the soil.” In reply to this letter Mr Adams stated that the matter had received consideration,' and had been fairly well looked into with a view to giving the definite cost of the report and estimates. He stated that, he was sorry he was not able to do so right away, as it would be necessary to further look into the matter on the ground before sufficient data could be available to meet the questions arising. If the council desired it he could visit the ground and obtain all that was required to submit the terms asked for, and at the same time probably be able to definitely advise on some of the parts of the problem which were perhaps confusing the main issue. The fee for this preliminary work would be £3 8s per day, with expenses—the latftjer to include such assistance and labour as may be necessary, and obtained locally. He did not anticipate spending more than a week in this preliminary work, and it would commit the Council to nothing further unless the Council desired it. Mr Adams submitted this offer as it would not be possible for him W state definite terms otherwise. At the special meeting of the Council on Thursday last it was decided to accept Mr Adams’ terms, on the motion of Cr. Parfitt, seconded by Cr. Hare.
