NGATEA. - A football match between Waitakarum, the winners pf the club competition. and Ngatea, the runners-up, was played on Saturday to decide ■ which team was the best on a dry . ground. Ideal football weather prevailed, and there was a fair attendance of spectators, but the teams that took the field were not up to the best that either club had put forward earlier in the season, nor was the exhibition of football as good as had been witnessed at previous matches. The game was open and very fast. The Waitakaruru forwards were undoubtedly superior, and overran their opponents.. On the day’s play the best team won. The teams were as follows Waitakaruru. —P. Waitakaruru won the toss and Ngatea kicked off against the sun but with the wind at their backs. Play centred in Waitakaruru’s twenty-five un*il Campbell centred and Clark saved to the line. D. Waitakaruru returned to the attack, and in loose ply in front of the - posts Johnson kicked across to Bemey,ywho gathered up and crossed line. - The kick by Wallis failed. Waitakaruru 8, Ngatea 0. The kick-out was forced by Waitakaruru. A scrum followed the drop-out and Waugh broke through, but lost the ball, which was carried back. From the resultant five-yards scrum Ngatea. gained a penalty kick, but Nicoll failed to convert. From a line-out Tanner t,ook a mark and opened up at kicking bout until the end of the quarter. • Waitakaruru found the line at Ngatea’s twenty-five flag from the opening kick in the second quarter. Midfield play was terminated by Slack breaking away, but McGuire stopped him near ijie corner. Waitakaruru’s attack was relieved by Nicoll with a long kick. Molloy received from a line-out, and with the forwards carried play up-fleld. An interchange of kicks followed until, for passing the ball off the ground, a scrum was ordered near Waitakaruru’s line. Ngatea hooked /and W. . Molloy took a drop-kick at goal, but failed to score. Following tight play in Waitakaruru’s territory W. Molloy secured from a line-out and fell over the line. On resuming after half-time Perkins returned the opening kick,, a ; scrum resulting in Ngatea’s territory. : Thorburn got possession and found tjie line. From. the loose following the scrum Leonard relieved to halfway. where hard play was indulged in ■ for some time. Ngatea gained grpund by line play. ■ • • In the final round Waitakaruru followed up the opening kick, but Nicoll marked and sent to the line at halfway. From the line-out Waitakaruru pressed ’and D. McGuire forced. From the drop-out fast open play eventuated in mid- - field until from a loose scrum C. Molloy relieved to Berney, who centred. Waitakaruru pressed, C. Molloy forcing. Waitakaruru returned the dropout and attacked strongly, but were stepped by C. Molloy near the posts. After loose play Tanner, forced. An ’ interchange of kicks was followed by a scrum in Waitakaruru’s territory. ■ Ngatea hooked and gained ground, but a penalty kick by Waitakaruru ' sent the ball out in Ngaea’s territory. Molloy sent the ball to Stretton, who made a good run, but was brought 5 down near the corner. The position was relieved for Ngatea by a penalty ■ kick, which was followed by a kick- - ing bout in mid-field. Ngatea attacked, but Perkins broke through, but was brought down by Ellis. No further score resulted, the game ending Waitakaruru 6, Ngatea 3. Mr R. Phelan was referee. TEAMS FOR NEXT SATURDAY.
