COUNTY PUNTS.

PURCHASE TO BE MADE. SPECIAL RATING AREA. At the meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council on Tuesday last Cr. Parfitt moved that the engineer proceed to Auckland and make arrangements >tp secure three punts on the hire purchase system. Cr. Hayward spoke in favour, and seconded. Crs. Madgwick and Hare spoke in favour of the motion. Crs. Mayn and Harris opposed, contending that, their ridings did not require punts. Cr. Parfitt said that punts were required whether the machinery loan was carried or not. That was his reason for obtaining pun's on the hire purchase system. Cr. Harris said that ridings tha: required punts should purchase them. If other ridings required a punt for a short time they could hire it. Cr. Madgwick, spoke against this, contending that the whole of the county should purchase punts and hire to ridings using them. Cr. Harris said that he represented a riding of poor hill country that would never require punts. Cr. Hayward .said that a portable crusher purchased out of the' last machinery loan had been promised to Waitakaruru riding. The whole county was paying for this, and he thought it .fair for Waitakaruru to help the rest of the county in the matter of punts. Cr. McLoughlin suggested a rating area comprising the area that would require the punts. Cr. Parfitt suggested that Cr. Hayward’s notice, of motion be put to the meeting, as it materially affected the question. Hayward then moved t,hat the area for the further machinery loan be the Pipiroa, Kppuarahi, Turua, Horahia, Kerepeehi, and Netherton ri.lings and that part of the Ngatea riding included in the Orchard bridge special rating- area. Cr. Madgwick seconded the motion, though he contended that all the county should have been included. On being put ■to the meeting the motion was carried unanimously. Cr, McLoughlin said that he was only agreeing as far as the purchase of punts and quarry equipment was concerned.- He would not have bitumen roads loaded on to his riding. Cr. Parfitt's motion, on being put to the meeting, was carried.
