HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY

INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Hauraki Plains County inspector, Mr W. J. Clare, reported to the council at its meeting yesterday as follows :— “I have visited all parts of the county, and have investigated a number of complaints, with fair results. During the month 67 dogs have been registered. This brings the total to date to 600. As soon as more collars arrive I will get the balance legistered. “A 1 good number of vehicles have been registered during the month, and I am taking steps to ascertain the names of those persons who are carting goods and cream for the dairy factories. There has been no heavy traffic on the roads to my knowledge, although I have reason to believe that there are a few persons evading the by-laws. “The matter of straying stock and pigs in drains has given a great deal of trouble. I have sent notices to several offenders, but in many cases I have been unable to trace the owners. As there is no pound within reasonable distance it was impossible to impound them. A great deal of damage has been done to the banks of the drains. I have served notices on two owners, who are first offenders. I have visited a third man three times, but up to the present he had made np effort to remedy the matter. 1 have received a number of complaints re dead beasts in drains and close to roads, and these, together with others that' came under my notice, have been attended to. “The outdoor work on the Ngatea workman’s house is nearly completed. Inside all the 'ceilings are in place, and most of the partitions are nearly completed. It, will be another month before the job is finished. “The Waitakaruru house is also nearing completion. The contractors hope to finish in a fortnight. I would like to ask authority to have a cupboard and shelving built in the house at a cost of £3 10s, and also to procure 125 ft of 4in pipes and traps for sewerage from the house to the drain. The cost will be £l3 14s, including labour in connection with same. “By atuhority from tlie county engineer I prepared estimates for the pound shelter-shed at Waitakaruru. A satisfactory price was received from the contractors, and the job was let at £35. A 400-gallon tank, a stand, and a drinking trough are required, at a cost of £7, and I would ask for your approval of same. Two gates, with the necessary fittings, for the Netherton ferry punt have been ordered. When these are erected the gates now in use will be utilised at the present yard. “Building permits to the value bf £2364 12s 6d have been issued during the month. A number have been held over as the applicant has not furnished the cost of-the work. “Herewith a list of defaulters against the county by-laws : — “J. Leonard, Rawerawe Road. I have warned him on three occasions for allowing hi,s pigs, to wander on the road and on the banks of the road drains. They have done a great amount of damage, and up to the present no effort has been made to abate the nuisance. “J. Leonard, Ra,werawe Road. 1 received a complaint that he owned a dead beast lying within a few feet of a boundary fence. On June 26 I called, and he promised to bury the animal. On July 20 I received another complaint about the same beast. On inspection I found that the animal had • not been buried. After further notice the beast was buried. With the Council’s approval I. propose taking the above man to Court about these two items. “In regard to the building erected in Kerepeehi without a permit, FBrown, the owner, wrote on July 27 stating that he intends erecting a building in compliance with' the Council’s by-laws. I propose to let this matter stand for a short period. If he does not carry out the work as stated I will take action against him. “W. McCowatt, Turua, has failed lo register three dogs, though I have visited 'the place twice, and also served notice. “Two settlers of Gumtown Road, Turua, have erected buildings closer tp the road than the Council’s bylaws permit. Both settlers will shift their buildings to comply with the bylaws. I am in communication with another settler on the same road who has made an addition to his cowshed.”
