.At a special meeting pf the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce Executive held last Wednesday evening it was decided to oppose any alterations in the railway time-table, as suggested by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. Members expressed the opinion that the proopsed alterations would seriously inconvenience the residents' of Paeroa, Thames, Waihi,, and Hauraki Plains. The motor services connecting with the trains from t,he’ Hauraki Plains and Tauranga districts would be detrimentally affected oy the proposed alterations.
The Finance Committee’s report, as read at the Council meeting >:n Thursday last, stated that the revenue for the month amounted to £358 4s 2d, and expenditure to £7Bl 2s, in eluding accounts, which were recommended for payment. The balance to the credit of the District Fund account at August 9, 1923, amounted to £925 7s Bd. The committee also recommended for payment the account to the 1920 loan account financial statement.
At the Borough Council meeting on Thursday last the Building Committee reported that applications during the month were received from T. H. Welch, to erect shed, Kennedy Street; C. Waines, to erect shed, Junction Road ; T. Mitchell, to erect convenien?e ipi Miss Whitten’s property, Willoughby Street; W. J, Ellis, to repair back shop and pull, down front shop in Belmont Road ; Paei’oa Quarry Cp., to erect a shed at the quarry. The applications were granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws. The estimated cost of the permits granted amounted to £l2O.
The remains of a gumdigger named Thomas Griffiths, aged 64, who has been missing since December 7, 1922, were found in a gully off Awakino Road, Dargaville, on Friday afternoon. Only bones and a walking stick were found, the latter being identified as the property of deceased.
The foreman’s report for the month, presented at the Borough Council meeting on Thursday 1 ast, t stated that Puke Road drain and those on both sides of Flora street had been cleaned, and the Te Aroha road drain was being attended to. ’ Willoughby Street footpath, between Arney Street and Mackay Street, had been cleaned, and Seth Street- footpath reformed and gravel laid on. Te Aroha,, Puke, Belmont., and. Old Te Aroha roads, and Rye Lane have been patched with metal. The amount of metal received during the month was 186 yards, and seven loads of gravel silt. No screenings were obtainable from the Tirohia quarry.
