■Ratepayers in Palmerston North .have just received an unpleasant shock in their annual rate demands. Following are some of the figures relating to the business quarters of the town. They speak for themselves: — A large business property in Broadway, which for the year 1919-20' was rated at £5B 19s lid, is this year faced with a demand for £l4O 13,s 9d, the increase over last year being £2l 10s Id. Another Broadway property, rated four years ago at £7l 6s 2d, has been levied upon to the extent of £l5B 6s Sd, which, again, is £23 odd more than last year. A Rangitikei street property has been rated at £4B 12s. Four years ago the municipal impost was £lO 17s 2d, and last year amounted to £4l 14s Id. Another small property off Rangitikei street has increased in four years from £5 9s 2d to £l5 Is 3d, the increase for the past twelve months being £3. In King Street a section, which for 1919-20 was rated at £8 10s 3d, has teen rated at £3l 10s 3d. A large property in the Square, the rates for which last year amounted to £434, has been raised this year to £5OB, equal to 30s a week. On the opposite side of the Square, the proprietors of premises, which last year was levied to the extent of £l3O, are now faced with an account for £lB2. Rates on residential properties have gone up in proportion. A five-roomed house that four years ago paid £5 ss, is now assessed at a little under £lO.
