: NGATEA. MUTUAL. IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY. A meeting of the Ngatea Mutual Improvement Society was held cn Wednesday last. Mr Schultz was in the chair, and the following members were present: Mrs Terrill, Mrs Harvey,, Miss Mason,, Messrs Davidson, Davidson, Phelan, and Blacklaws. The secretary reported that he handed pvei’ £4 (proceeds of one of the evenings) for the town lighting scheme. It was decided to write to the Turua Concert Party and invite it. to give a performance at Ngatea. A debate on. “ Town Boy versus Country Boy ” and a Community Sing is to take place on Wednesday, 15th inst. KEBEPEEHI. LEADSWINGERS CLUB. The opening function of the Kerepeehi Leadswingers, Club was held on Thursday last, and took the form of a smoke concert. About sixty exarmy and naval men and their cobbers were present despite the very rough weather. Mr G. A: Avey presided, and in his opening remarks said that the club had been formed at the request of numerous returned men as a means of keeping them together and to promote social functions, ettc. The toast of “The King/’ was pro ‘ posed and drunk with musical honours. Mr Loudon,' in responding to the toast of “ The Club,” traced the idea that led up to its formation. The toast of ‘ Absent Comrades ” was reppnded to in a very fitting manner by Mr I. D. Jones. Mr J. Murdoch briefly reponded to “ The Hauraki Plains.” Mr W. Thompson did justice to the toast of “ Local Sports.” Mr N, A. McMillan struck a touching chord when responding to “The Visitors.” Mr G. A. Avey did justice to the toast of the . “ Nurses.” To the toast of “The Musicians,” Mr E. Charmers suitably reponded. Mr W. Herkt struck a humorous-note in replying to the toast of “ The Diggers ” by referring to the peace time diggers on the Plains. Mr G. Masters, in his customary able manner, reponded to the toast of “The Ladies.” Musical items, were contributed by Messr,s E. Charmers, M. McMillan, McMillan and Armour, and the Kerepeehi Orchestra, and songs by Messrs J. Mitchell, E. Charmers, Veysey, W. Parsons, J. Hands and J. A. Blakeman, recitations by Messrs N. A. McMillan and Efl Charmers, and stories by Messrs Loudon, N. A. McMillan, and J. Murdock. All the items’ were well received and encored. The whole function was admirably conducted, and augurs well for the future of the club.
