THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto : Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 1923. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The meeting of the Acclimatisation Society which was called for Saturday night lapsed for want of a quorum. . Two members attended,, and they came in from Karangahake, and were consequently much. annoyed at the apathy of the local so-called “sports.” At an extraordinary meeting of the Farmers’ Veterinary Club, held at Ngatea on Friday last,; a resolution was passed providing that in the event of the club being wound up the assets would be sold by ..public auction and the proceeds divided equally among the members who were financial at, the time. This provision ?s required by the Registrar of Incorporated Societies before incorporation can be granted. There was a good attendance at the Loan and Mercantile Companry’s stock sale at Ngatea on Friday last, but the yarding was less than the average. The was little demand, and competition was not keen. A horse sale was held in conjunction .with the stock sale, but many horses promised were not yarded. Competi- 1 tion was keen, and fair prices were realised. Medium draughts sold up to £35, others £lO to £l5 ; hacks £8 to £l5. No heavy draughts were offered; A total loss totalling nearly £lOOO will be made by one bookseller in Napier as a result of the Government’s decision to limit the choice of school books to the products of one New Zealand firm. Other booksellers will also make heavy losses, and the trade is.much agitated over the decision of the Government. These losses will be multiplied all ove-’ the Dominion, as large stocks of English readers, copybooks, etc,, are held, and there are only five months in which they can be disposed of to a limited dematid. It is expected that some steps will be taken to ndeavour to persuade the Government to at least extend the time by a year.—Napier Daily Telegraph.
