WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr E. Shaw) presented his monthly report as follows to the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council at its meeting last Thursday •' Proposals have been prepared for the expenditure of £l7O, £ for £. flood damages. The following authorities were received under grants: £lOO for Hip Road, Karangahake, and £9O, £ for £l, for metalling 14 chains of Paeroa-Te Aroha Road. Should the weather prove favourable and the roads, fit to cart metal over I would ask permission to call tenders at an early date for this work. Tenders are called for forming and culverting 42% chains of Patterson’s Road. Waihi East, which close at 2 p.m. this day. “ Grants for Hill Road. Karangahake, and the Komata-Maratoto track are being carried but on wages. Otto Bierring’s contract for making a deviation on the Waihi-lWhnnga-mata Road has been completed and now awaits inspection. ’> Owing to the very wet season the roads throughout the County have, more or less damaged, and extra maintenance work will be required to put the roads back “into shape ; also a quantity of metal will be needed for repairs. 1 aril very pleased to sAy that the fine weathei* of late has had a beneficial, effect on the roads, and in consequence . one hears less complaints. " In company with the Mining Inspector and Or. H. M. Corbett (Waitekauri riding), an inspection was made of the To Whariki Track for payment of a grant of £5O for work done. I also took the netting to Golden Cross and had the groin placed across the fowl so as to protect the same in flood time. “Re Maintenance Work in the Waihi Riding.—lt is impossible for one man to cope with the work required to be done, as there is such a large extent of unmetalled roads needing attention. I would suggest that the portion of the road lying between Mataora Bridge and the eastern boundary of the Waihi riding (known as the Waihi-Whangamata Road) be maintained by a settler who is on the spot,, and, I believe, willing to do the work, say, six or seven days a month,, according to road requirements. The length of the road hi question is 2% miles. ‘Re Pipes on Old Tauranga Road. —The cost of placing 18in. over-flow pipes in position on this road would be approximately £9 10s. “Re Frankton Road Special Loan. —I intend to make a start at an early date preparing the unformed portion of Frankton Road, and regrading a portion of the Old Tauranga Road so as to have same in oi*der when the metalling starts. “ On July 13, in company with the clerk, Mr Evans,, I visited the Thames County for the purpose of comparing notes re the Timber Commission, and again on the 17th and 18th, we, in company with the chairman, attended the Commission at Thames inquiring into the timber royalties. On the 24th, in compfiny with the chairman and Or. Morgan, I attended the Main Highways Conference at Hamilton.”
