Apropos to the price of ppossum skins, a Wanganui business man lent the “ Herald ” for perusal a marked catalogue of a. public auction of Australian skins at Home on Januray 25 last. The catalogue comprised an entry of 256,197 of these skins, besides those of ringtails, wallaby, bear, fox, cat, etc. Apparently the demand for opossum skins was limited, for the catalogue shows that a large number of lots were marked unsold. Some of the skins sold as low as Is, while extra large ones went up to 15s. The majority of the prices were in the region of 4s, 6s, 7s, 6d, 8s 3d, and an occasional 10s 6d. The cat skin portipn of the schedule makes interesting reading. The skin of a black house cat was worth Is 7d, while the grey “ Tom ” realised Is 9d. Other coloured cat skins were worth lOd, and kitts l%d.
