In a pamphlet by Mr Gerald Lightfoal published by the Institute of Science and Industry, it is pointed but that Australia’s national debt, is now equivalent to 9s per acre of the whole Commonwealth,, or £l5B por head of the population. "Our increased liabilities,” Mr Lightfoot says, "can only be met effectively by increased production, and efforts in that direction most be guided by science.” The control of stock pests and plant diseases would save millions yearly, and the application of scientific research to the timber and mining industries would be equally effective in increasing production and values. Mr Lightfoot urges further co-operation between the Commonwealth Institute and State Departments, and he suggests that both primary producers and manufacturers mighjt also not only co-operation, but - contribute towards the cost. - By the pooling of resources large problems could be investigated effectively and economically.
