EAST 9, WEST 6. PLAINS MATCHES. The .club football competitions ou the Plains were advanced a step further on Saturday, when Ngatea and Waitakaruru added another two points . to their totals. The day was fine and the grounds dry, but heavy. WAITAKARURU V. TURUA, Waitakaruru' were late in arriving, as their conveyance had broken down on the road. At 3.10 P.m. the teams lined out as follows: — Waitakaruru.—P. Clark, L. Berney,. r C.,Stretton, B. Wallis, G. Buchanan, A. Otter, Thorburn, T. Lang, W. O’Neill, B. Perkins, D. Dalgetty, CClark, H. Coxhead, H. Dalgetty, and R. Slack Turua.—A. Elvin, E. Hooper, J. Martin, G. Russell, L. James, H. Elvin, H. McCollum, L. Ryan,| G. Elvin, ERobinson, T. Hill, T. Sharman, 0. Bedford, H. Hill, and L. Pentecost. Waitakaruru won the toss and Turua kicked off against the wind. The ball went out in midfield. From the throw-in . Waitakaruru pressed and carried play to Turua’s quarter, where A Elvin mulled and M. Elvin was compelled to force., Play came ba"k to Turua’s quarter from the drop-out, and Waitakaruru had another free kick, but Clarke’s attempt did not clear the goal. From the drop-out play was in midefidd until line play put Turua on the defensive. A free kick for Waitakaruru taken by Thorburn was not converted, and Turua forced. From the drop-out the visitors pressed, and Turua again jK forced. An enterchange of kicks followed the drop-out until the ball went out near Turua’s line. From the throw-in Pentecost saved by kicking to the line. Line play followed, Tu- • rua eventually breaking through and carrying out at Waitakaruru’s twen-ty-five flag. From a.line out a penalty to Waitakaruru cleared to Turua’s territory. Waitakaruru pressed and L. Berney had a good- opportunity to run but passed, Turua forcing. The home team followed up the kick-out, but Thorburn marked and found the line. From the line-out Waitakaruru attacked and carried play into Turua’s territory, where. C. Stretton ' crossed, but was brought back for a penalty. The pressure was maintained, the defenders eventually forcing. An interchange of kicks followed the drop-out until Waitakarur.i started a rush, which was stopped by Ryan. GBuchanan marked, but his kick was not successful. Waitakaruru went on the attack after changing over, a scrum ensuing on the home team’s line. Turua hooked and returned play to mid-field. A > penalty kick later gained more the ball going out inside Waitakaruru’s twenty-jfive line. Play was itt that quarter for some time, Wallis relieving to half-way with a line kick. From the line-out a scrum ensued, from which the visitors hooked and attacked, but A. Elvin cleared. Hard play then ranged in mid-fleld. From a line-out; Turua got possession, but Waitakaruru ev.ened up with a penalty. Up and down play was terminated by the visiting backs carrying play into Turua’s territory. On resuming after half-time fast, open play ensued in mid-field until Waitakaruru broke through in a lineout, -a five-yards scrum being the result. Turua hooked and Hooper sent to mid-field. Waitakaruru got possession and carried down the field, B. Wallis scoring. C. Clarke failed to convert. Waitakaruru 3, Turua G. A kicking bout followed interspersed with marks. Neither side gained any advantage until Waitakaruru started - to move from a line-out and went on the attack. Turua hooked in a scrum _ while defending and cleared to halfJryway. Turua forced after line play. A lengthy period of tight play ensued about Turua’s twenty-five line. From a scrum Waitakaruru pressed, and were awarded a try for an obstruction on Turua’s line. The kick failed. Waitakaruru- 6, Turua 01 The last round opened with play in mid-field. Waitakaruru gained a penalty from a scrum, and Wallis converted. Waitakaruru 9, Turua 0. Ryan terminated mid-fleld play and started Turua on the attack. Several scrums took place near the visitors’ line, until finally they forced. Turua returned the kick-out and Waitakaruru again forced. Play beL came hard in Waitakaruru’s territory, until from a scrummage Ryan picked up and scored. H. Elvin converted, making the scores, Waitakaruru 9, Turua 5. ' Mr J. Banks was referee. The game on the whole was fas', R?and the teams were evenly matched, but little brilliant football was witnessed. -
