HAURAKI A. AND P. ASSN.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Hauraki A. and' P. Association was held in the Soldiers’ Club, Paerca, on Saturday evening. The president (Mr W. F. Johnstone) occupied the chair. There were also present: Messrs J. Hamilton, W. Marsh, R. Stock (senr.), J. W. Silcock, E. W. Porritt, N. Beattie, J. P. Findlay, P. R. Hubbard, F. C. Hubbard, J. A. Reid, W. J. Byrne, G. Buchanan, J. Buchanan, and the secretary (Mr E. Edwards). REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET. The annual report was read as follows :— “Your Committee has pleasure in submitting the annual report and balance-sheet for the year just ended, and recommends the adoption of same. “The balance-sheet shows that the Association has experienced another successful year, and the finances have been slightly improved, the credit on the year’s working being £130.' This balance includes a number of unpaid subscriptions and promised donations. During the year the Association conducted an art union,, which assisted the funds of the Association to the extent of £7l 7s 6d. The Association was very fortunate in that it was presented with two pedigree Jersey bulls, which were given with the prizes for the art union. Your Committee de sires to place on record its thanks to Messrs G. Buchanan and B. E. Veale for the donation of the bulls. “The Committee decided to continue holding a two-day show, and the experience gained the previous year enabled the stewards to greatly improve the arrangements and thereby improve the show. The exhibits again showed an increase, especially in the light horse and hunter classes, which showed nearly 10’0 per cent, increase. The Grand Parade was again an outstanding, feature of the show ring events. In the cattle section some of the breeds showed a falling off. The Jerseys, however, were more strongly represented than ever, and that breed competed for the Captain Hubbard Memorial Cup, as there were insufficient entries forthcoming from the Ayrshire breeders, whose turn it was to compete for the cup. Mr W. J. Hall was the winner of the cup with his group. Saleyards.—Your Committee is pleased to report that a suitable working arrangement has been made with the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co. for the lease of the saleyards wherein they are to hold periodical sales. 'As your Association is to receive a percentage on the sales held in the yards, the Committee would be pleased if members would, as far as possible, support the sales and thereby assist the Association. “As in former years the ladies last year again greatly assisted the Association by providing luncheon and afternoon tea on both show days Your Committee desires to place on record its appreciation and thanks to the ladies.
“The Committee desires to thank the Judges and Stewards and thos? wno so willingly rendered the Association assistance. Also the Paeroa Domain Board and Mr Hamilton, the caretaker. The Methodist Chiirc ’ Committee for the use of the Centenary Hall, and all who donated trophies and cash prizes.” The balance-sheet was opened for discussion.
Mr Byrne said he thought that the amount outstanding in unpaid sub scriptions was too large. The secretary said that the amount had been reduced by nearly £3O since lhe books had been audited. Mr Reid asked what 1 was the position regarding the sum of £24 5s outstanding by the advertisers for space in the show catalogues. The secretary said that he thought (he whole of the amount would be col’ected. Accounts had been rendered, and the response had been satisfactory. Mr Porritt remarked that in his opinion the setting out of the bal-ance-sheet was hardly correct. He thought that a statement of accounts should be shown. Mr Silcock thought that the Association’s system of keeping the accounts should be altered. The secretary said that the system had been followed out a.s in previous years He would welcome any change the members might suggest He thought the present system was quite unsuitable. After considerable discussion Mr Silcock moved that the system of book-keeping should be altered so as to simplify matters., and that Mr G. E. Allen be approached with a view to making the necessary alterations. Seconded by Mr Reid and The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The president intimated that successful had been made % with the Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Co. to use the yards for the purpose of holding stock sales. The charge was fixed on a percentage basis of one-half per cent., the minimum charge to be £l5 for the twelve months. The action of the president and secretary was confirmed. USE OF RACECOURSE. The president reported that the sub-committee appointed had not been | able to make satisfactory arrange- 1 ments with the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for the use of its picperty for the purpose of holding the show. . GREEN FEED. B It was decided that the offer of Miss Cock to loan a paddock for the purpose of growing green feed for the show be accepted with thanks. Messrs Reid and P. R. Hubbard offered to donate manure, Mr Buchanan to cut blackberries, and the president to do the ploughing. AGE OF CATTLE. Mr Buchanan suggested that the age of stock should date from June 1, instead of July, as formerly. The suggestion was agreed to. GATEKEEPERS. Mr Silcock said that he thought members should assist on the gates on show days, thus saving the Association a considerable sum in wages. The matter was referred to the executive committee. OFFICIALS’ LUNCHEON. The president said he was of the opinion that the ladies who had provided the stewards’ luncheon last year should be given a holiday at the forthcoming show. He thought, that the Association was now in a position to arrange for a caterer, and not rely pn the ladies again. He moved in that direction. Mr Porritt agreed with the suggestion. - Mr Silcock said that the exhibitors ■ had been provided with free luncheon, and he did not see how that could be arranged if a caterer was engaged. Mr Findlay said that that difficulty could be overcome by issuing luncheon tickets to exhibitors. Mr Marsh thought that only judges and show officials should be given free luncheon. Mr Buchanan agreed with the last speaker. He did not see why exhibitors should be given free luncheon. Mr Findlay thought .that it was in tho interests .of the Association to continue the system of free luncheon to exhibitors. The Paeroa show had a good name, and was becoming noted for its hospitality. Mr Porritt moved that tDe issue of luncheon tickets be left in the hands of the president and secretary. Seconded by Mr Reid and carried. Mr Reid said that there was one " point, to be considered, and that was that the Association had accepted the help of the ladies, not so much with the idea of saving money as it was to ensure that the judges and officials could have their lunches without undue crowding or delay. > After further discussion it was decided that the matter should be left in the hands of the committee to arrange with the caterer. At the conclusion of the business Mr Johnstone thanked the members for again-doing him the honour of electing him president for a further term. He paid special tribute to the valuable services rendered by the secretary, stewards, and other officials during the vast year.
