THE MATCH AT NGATEA. Following Is a survey of the Ngatea v. Turua match, played at Ngatea on Saturday last, in which the visiting team was defeated bj r 14 ponits to .0 : The teams took the field as fol-, lows :—■ Turua. —James, Hooper, Martin, H. Elvin, A. Elvin, G. Elvin, McCollum, Ryan, Robinson, .McCowatt, Clark, Sherman, McCoid, Pentecost, R. .Smith. Ngatea—Yates, K. Campbell, McGuire, Hortene, W. Molloy, F. Nicoll, W. Tanner, N. Ryan, W. Johnstone, R. Jobe, R. Spencer, S. Phillips, FBanks, J. Ivan, L. Lipscombe. ?<gatea kicked off, and open play followed in their half of the field till from an interchange of kicks the ball went out. Nicoll marked from the throw-in, and found the line at half-way. After several line-outs the- Ngatea forwards advanced with the ball at their feet until N. Ryan by getting off-side gave Turua an opportunity to find the line. Turua broke away from the line-out an 1 carried play to the home team’s territor.y, but off-side play gave Ngatea relief. Following a scrum Ngatea worked back to mid-4ield, where open play was indulged in until Turua with a long kick compelled Ngatea to force. The drop-out, was, immediately returned and • Ngatea agam forced. Turua continued to attack until Campbell relieved with a good run, after which play was restricted to mid-field until the end'of the quarter. A kicking bout followed the kick off in the second round, the ball eventually going out in Turua’s territory. From the throw-in Phillips kicked the ball • over the dead-ball line. The ball was sent cut at halfway, and from the throw-in Nicoll got possession and punted. Molloy followed up and Turua had to force. The Turua backs got into action, but, good tackling by Johnstone and Tanner' stopped the rush. Play became fast and open. From a throw-in Ryan got possession and kicked, and when following up was obstructed by McCollum. Both players were ordered off the -field for threatening behaviour. From the scrum which followed Molloy got possession and scored, and also converted. Ngatea 5, Turua 0. Play about half-way was terminal-. ,ed by Ngatea finding the line at the visitors’ twenty five flag. Forward piny wag indulged in until half-time.
The third quarter opened with play in mid-field. After open play in Ngatea’s territory Turua forwards pressed, but Ngatea forced. From a lineout at half-waj> Tarnier made an opening and passed to Nicoll, who, after making a good run,, passed to Campbell, who scored. Mollpy failed, to convert. Ngatea 8, Turua 0. Elvin was ordered off for fighting, and Turua had a free kick which they sent to the line. Ain interchange of kicks saw Ngatea’s full back penalised' at half-way. From the scrum the Ngatea backs got going, but'a pass forward gave Turua .a free kick, the ball being sent out when time was called. Mr J. Banks was referee. The game was marked by the fine handling of the greasy ball by the Ngatea backs, Tanner at. naif making good openings, which were made the most of. . Ryan held the Turua team together throughout, but the lack of support spoiled his opportunities.
