HIKUTAIA NEWS.

-.a--’: SOCIAL. ' One of the most successful and enjoyable socials held this season was that organised by the bachelor meinjiers of the Tennis Club as a return to that given by the lady members some time ago, and held in the hall last Thursday night. As vas evident from thelavish and pretty decorations, the State of‘the floor, and other preparations,. the bachelors had not spared themselves in their efforts, to attain the success they deserved. From start to finish the enjoyment was complete, and all “went merry” as the orthodox wedding bells. All that go to constitute a social were present: Excellent mu§ic provided by Mrs Potter, efficient M’s C- in the persons of Messrs .E. Alley and C. Murdock, a dainty supper, and a large asremblage of dancers out for enjoyment. A, pleasing variation was found .in the monologues by Miss Walker and E. Alley,, both of whom, had io respond to authoritative encores, and the songs so well rendered by the “three old maids of Lea,” and the banjo boys, who, dressed in thorough keeping with the parts to be sustained, fairly brought down the house, and who were vociferously recalled. The three old maids ■ (Messrs Alley, Geo. Gibb, and El Lemon) in their quaint costumes, together with their naive and coquettish mannerisms, and their falsetto. voices, added the touch of true comedy that evoked the hearty hilarity of their auditors. The “ streamer,” “ tap,” and other novelty dances also formed pleasant interludes which, besides forming spectacular features, gave pleasure to the dancers as well as to the specta--tors. It was in the “wee short hours” that the social terminated. The committee, which comprised Messrs E. Alley,. C. and G. Gibb,, E. Lemon, C. Murdock, and W. Samson, are to be congratulated oi| their, arand may ‘ rest assured that future efforts in a simlar. direction will be attended with greater success. The enchre competition was welLcontested, the prize winners being Mrs V. Brown and Mr J. Elliot.. GALE. A severe' gale accompanied bv heavy commenced last Friday night and . continued for over 48 hours. Though the surface of most of the paddocks, already sodden with former rains, was under water, and a few trees suffered, very little damage was done. The creek, which rose several feet, kept within the confines of its banks, so that we were spared ths flood which many settlers anticipated. PERSONAL. Her many friends are more than glad to learn that Mrs I. M. Robinson has so far recovered from the severe illness, which necessitated a sojourn in the Thames Hospital, whence she returned to her home a few days ago. FACTORY.
