HIKUTAIA NEWS.
SOCIAL. Owing to the weather conditions prevailing on Thursday of last weex the social organised by the ladies’ commitft.ee of the Croquet Club had to be postponed until the following Saturday, when, favoured with better atmospheric conditions, a fair attendance gathered in the hall. The music for the dancing supplied by ladies and gentlemen present gave every satisfaction, while to the supper ample justice was done.- The euchre tables were well filled, and an eager competition took place, the winners being Miss A. Alley and Mr Mate Lovfich, consolation prizes being awarded to Mrs Elliot and Mr H. Ingham. A feature was the rendition of the King’s and Queen’s messages to the children of 1 the Empire, the gramophone being kindly lent for the occasion by Mr J. Miller. VALEDICTORY. On the occasion of his leaving for Tuakau, where he has bought a business, Mr George Asher was entertained to a smoke concert, which was held in the billiard saloon on Saturday night. The popularity of the guest was shown by the large attendance present, which included representatives of all the Rugby unions in the neighbourhood. With speeches, songs, and recitations a very enjoyable time was passed, the toast of the evening, the health and prosperity of Mr and Mrs Asher, being received with hearty musical honours. The various speakers eulogised Mr Asher’s services to spout generally, and co football in particular. During their residence in Hikutaia Mr. and Mrs Asher made many friends, all of whom - regret their departure, and to their new home they take with them the best wishes of the residents of Hikutaia. SCHOOL. Recently Mrs Haigh was. appointed to the Hikutaia West school, but evidently some hitch has arisen as the school has not been open since the relieving teacher, Miss O’Laughlin, left for Taumarunui nearly a fortnight ago. Owing to the recent flood this school was closed fcr a week. Thus a considerable amount of leeway will have -to be made up. WEATHER. So far as this month has gone we have had only one dry day, although the prospects of fair, if cold, weather seemed good on Saturday. As a result of the sodden condition of things colds, sore throats, and mild influenza are fairly prevalent. The attendance at school is adversely affected. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs D, Courtenay and family left at the end of last week for Puriri, where Mr Courtenay has purchased a farm. Their departure i& a distinct loss to Hikutaia, where they were deservedly popular. ■ Mr and Mrs . .Weiss and their littledaughter are at. present’inmates of the Thames Hospital. Mr R. R. Morrison is at present, and has been for some time, confined to bed by a somewhat serious indisposition.
Mr and Mr,s Rehm' returned to Hikutaia on Saturday last after a visit to Auckland.
