PLAINS MACHINERY LOAN
COUNCILLORS NOT UNANIMOUS.
At yesterday’s meeting of (the Hauraki Plains County Council Cr. C. WParfitt gave notice to move that the previous resolution regard to raising a machinery loan of £20,000' be rescinded and the amount of £22,000 be substituted.
Cr. Mayn said that the matter should be deferred until after the result of the Maukoro Quarry prospect was made known. Until then he would oppose the machinery loan. Cr. Harris said that he could not support, the machinery loan. His riding had its own quarry, and would not equire punts, locomotives, and tramways. Much of his riding was hill country that would not require road machinery.
Cr, Hayward said he quite agreed with this, and suggested that a special railing .area be formed, including those ridings that would benefit by the machinery.
Cr. Mayn said that he was opposed to the loan. His riding would get little benefit.
• Cr. McLoughlin also spoke against the loan, contending that his riding would not benefit. The loan should be raised by ridings that required the machinery.
Cr. Mayn was of opinion that ridings using the Council’s machinery should pay for same.
Cr. Hayward gave notice of motion that the machinery loan be raise! and a. special rating area be created and that all other parts of the county using the machinery pay for same. The area roughly was all east of the Waitakaruru canal.
Cr. Parfitt moved, and Or. Nicholson seconded, that discussion on his notice of motion be deferred till next
