PLAINS COUNTY DISCUSSION.. SPECIAL MEETING TO BE HELD. At yesterday’s meeting of the Hau- | raki Plains County Council a schedule was received from the Engineer-in-Chief, Public Works Department, Wellington, showing the grouping of counities to form the south Auckland ’ Highway District No. 2, together with statistics concerning the counties. He asked that the information be corrected if necessary and for any su|gested amendments. hTe counties included were: Manukau, Franklin, Waikato, Raglan, Weipa, Kawhia, Otorohanga, Coromandel, Thames, Hauraki Plains, Ohinemuri, Piako, and Matamata. Members said that there appeared fo be a great lack of community of interest. ; . The Main Highways Board wrote Muting that it concurred with the action of the Public Works Department in grouping the counties into l highway districts. In order that the Board miyhS&'get, to work without delay whertUhe Act came into operation, it. was stated that it was essential that the question of grouping and seiting up of the district councils should, be disposed of at the earliest possible date. . E was essential that no time be lost. 'it would be necessary for ’ each council to indicate whether or not it concurred in the suggested grouping. It was further suggested that a conference of delegates from each county should be convened as early as possible in order to arrive at a decision. Cr. Hayward moved that the matter be brought up at the Paeroa conference, and that discussion should be deferred until after t then. . Cr. Harris said tha|t the Council should discuss the matter thoroughly, otherwise this part of the district woulcTbe left. He moved that a special meeting be held to consider thq,_ matter, and that in the meantime the clerk obtain as much data as possible. Cr. McLoughlin said that the flat road from the Waikato to- Aucklandthrough Maukom and Waitakaruru would eventually be a main highway.. The engineer pointed out that from information he had received the Miranda road would be the main East Coast road. The motion was seconded by Cr,. McLoughlin and. carried, • and the: clerk was instructed to notify the - Board accordingly.
