WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr E. Shaw) submitted the following report to the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Corneil on Thursday last; — ' “ Proposals were sent tp the Public Works Department for metalling 14 chains of Paeroa-Te Aroha Road, also for expenditure of £2OO on Maratoto Road under Mines grant. The latter has been approved and authority received. Authorities were also received for the following works: KpmataMaratoto, £5O; Patterson’s Road, £150; Ratarua Road, £3OO ; and £l7O (£ lor £) for flood damage. The approval of the plan and. specifications for the expenditure of £lOO on Hill Road, Karangahake, was received. “A scheme for the expenditure of accrued thirds te March 31, 1923, amounting to £65 was forwarded to the Land Board for approval.
“ Re Road required by Leopold and others who reside in the Mataura Valley and have no access except through private land to their holdings. In company with the chairman and the riding member,, C. P. Corbett, i made an inspection and was me;, by Mr Leopold,, who pointed out their grievances. To carry pu)t the work required would need a s,um greater than your Council could meet, and it was requested that they (the seiners) go in for a small rating area and raise a loan of half the money required to do the work and apply to the Government for a subsidy, who no doubt under the circumstances would grant assistance,.,more particularly when the settlers are willing to help themselves. “Re formirfg the eastern end of the Old Tauranga Road. —To make this road suitable for vehicular traffic would cost approximately £l5. “ The continuous wet weather experienced of late is having a serious effect on practically all reads within the County. Maintenance work is being carried out to the best advantage and metal is being, placed for repairs where the roads are fit to cart over. The bottom has practically fallen out of the unmetalled portion of the Paeroa-Te Aroha road, and I found it necessary to keep a gang of men making urgent repairs with the best material available so as to keep the road open for traffic. Moter cars with chains on (which are necessary to get through) np doubt left more than their mark in their trail, and added considerably to the damage done.”
