PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.

MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING. l’he monthly meeting of the Paeroa District. High School Committee was held i;n the Borough Chambers on Saturday evening. Mr C. H. Pascoe presided over the following: Messrs E. E. Gillman, W. T. Power N. C. Busby, C. Mettam, W. J. McKenna, C. Cane, and the secretary, Mr W. L. Lawrence. The headmaster, Mr G. H. Taylor, was also in attendance. MANUAL SCHOOL. Replies from the Paeroa Borougn Council and Ohinemuri and Hauraki Plains County Councils were received. Those local bodies advised that they would be pleased to support the committee in its efforts, to secure a manual training school in Paeroa, and that they had forwarded resolutions co the Minister for Education on the matter. It was decided to write and thank the local bodies concerned for the support accorded the committee. FREE SCHOOL .BOOKS. On the motion of Mr Busby, seconded by Mr Cane, the following resolution was carried; “That this Committee again urges upon the Education Department the immediate need of assistance in providing free school books for the children of indigent parents, the Committee to use its. discretion in issuing books to such children, and that, only bona fide cases should receive such help.” The headmaster said that the Department had already a regulation governing this question, but he would like to see a definite ruling on the matter received from the Board. It was stated that the maintenance at, pie,sent allowed school committees was insufficient to provide free books for children in such circumstances. EMPIRE DAY MESSAGES. Ijt was suggested by Mr Giliman that Their Majesties’ Empire Day messages to the school children of New Zealand should be printed and placed in a prominent place in each class-room. The Royal messages contained beautiful -and helpful words of advice and wisdom that children of any school age could readily understand. The matter was left in the hands of the headmaster and secretary t,o arrange for printing and circulating the messages. FREE FREIGHT ON BOTTLES. The head office of the Northern Steamship Co., Ltd., Auckland advis - ed . that it was prepared do assist the children in raising funds for playground improvements by making a donation to the Committee of theamount of the freight chargeable on the empty bottles which were to be sent to Auckland for sale. The committee decided. to record its thanks and appreciation to the company, and also to Mr J. W. Silcock, the company’s local agent, for his assistance in the matter. THANKS. The Committee recorded its thanks and appreciation to the headmaster and his staff for the loyal assistance given and time spent in connection wiith the collecting, classifying, and sorting of empty bottles during the recent bottle gathering campaign to raise funds for schoolground improvements. Also t,o the local Defence officers for the free use of ithe Drill Hall, and all those who so willingly assisted the Committee by donations of packing cases, sacks, free cartage to the wharf, and voluntary labour. GROUND IMPROVEMENTS. The Committee has a plan of further extensive improvements to the school grounds, and it was decided to proceed with t.his work as soon as the final returns from the bottles sold in Auckland,and the Government subsidy was received. BOYS’ PLAYGROUND. It was decided to hold over the work of levelling and sanding the upper portion of the boys’ playground, pending more settled weather,, as it was deemed unwise to proceed with the work while the ground was so wet. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Gillman and Mettam were apnointed a visiting commilttee for the ensuing month. a ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £25 12s 6d were passed for payment.
