The remarkable alertness of. Frank Hewitt, who some time in the sixties stood out as a great athlete, was still in evidence, when he called into the Sydney Sun office a few days ago on his 78t.h birthday. He stands in the front ranks with the world’s greatest foo-t, runners, adds the Sun. His record may be forgotten by the present generation, but to the past generation a recitation of his performances in history. He is still very proud of his match with the aboriginal sprinter, Charlie Samuels. At the age of 50, with a concession of five yards in a hundred he beat the black meteor then at the top of his fame—for £lOO aside. His record for the half mile, Imin 43sec, on a straight road course (Riccarton Road, Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1871), still stands.
