WAIHI V* PLAINS. WIN FOR PDAINS, 8 TO 0. The inter-union matches, for the Frank Poland Memorial Cup were continued on Saturday, when Waihi journeyed to Ngatea and suffered defeat at the hands of the Plains team by 8 to 0. > The day was fine, and there was no wind, but the field was slippery and wet in Places. The teams lined out as follows:— Waihi.—Full-back, C. Dellamore; three-quarters, a McLeay, W. Williams; five-eighths, R. Williams, EMooney; , half-back, W. Holford: rover, W. Johns ; forwards, T. Agnew, C. Quigg, W. Hughes, A. Robinson, ' Samways, R. Eastwood, D. Cutforth. Plains.—Full-back, P. Clarke; three-quarters, K. Campbell, C. Stretton, J. Adlum ; five eighths, F. Nicoll, W. Molloy; half-back, G. Garry; rover, L. Ryan; forwards, K. Fox, J: Morley, L. Lipscombe, R. Steedman, T. Rapana, L. Pentecost,-. D. Cowdrey. Waihi kicked off against the. sun, and from an interchange of kicks the ball went out. Plains pressed from the throw-in, and Campbell was forced out in Waihi’s twenty-five. From the throw-in the Waihi forwards broke away, but were stopped by ' Campbell, who, however, was collared and the ball went out near the corner. Stretton forced. W'aihi returned the drop-out to Adlum, who found the line. An interchange of kicks followed a scrum, and Campbell was ■- collared on the line aft half-way. Hard play in mid-field fol lowed, until Garry took a mark, which Plains followed up to near Waihi’s , goal line, where Dellamore saved for the time being. Plains, however, dribbled over the line and McLeay forced. Play following the drop-out centred in mid-field, Strettton taking a mark, which Waihi returned. The home team was penalised for- off-side play, and the 'kicii went out: Campbell marked and sent play to Waihi’s quarter,, where McLeay marked and .cleared to half-way. A penalty to Waihi terminated a period pf line play, Cowdrey' finding the line. Quigg, broke away in the line-out, but the Plains, forwards brought, play back again and reached the visitors’ line. ’The defenders ■ ; worked back to half-way, where Adlum found the line. A penalty kick by W. Molloy put Plains on the attack. From a scrummage Plains attempted a passing rush,' but Campbell failed to accept.. After the change over Waihi broke away and sent out near the Plains corner. Form the - throw-in Stretton forced. Play centred in mid-field. From a throw-in Adlum sent up the ’ line. The Waihi full-back mulled and Molloy sent to the bne. Play came back to half-way, where Plains ' had a penalty kick. A kick by Stretton was sent out near the corner by Dellamore. A penalty against Waihi gave W. Molloy a kick at goal, but it was unsuccessful and Waihi returned play* to mid-field. For a forward pass Waihi gained a free kick, and another was immediately awarded for off-side play. Dejlamore took a shot from half-way, Molloy returning, but the ball came back to Plains’ twentyfive. Ryan relieved. from a scrummage but Dellamore found the line. Plains obtained.the advantage from the throw-in, Waihi forcing. From the drop-out the Waihi backs attempted a passing rush, but were stopped. by /the opposing - backs, who cleared’ to the line. A penalty kick by Waihi was. returned to their territory by Campbell and Ryan. I An interchange of kicks followed the throw-in, and a scrum was ordered. Waihi got the ball and brought play to half-way, where much line play was indulged in, Plains slowly working up the line and compelling Waihi to force. A scrum ensued, and from the loose Molloy took a mark and relieved. A free kick relieved for Plains, Dellamore sending out at half-way. A scrummage followed the throw-in, and E. Williams took a mark and sent. out. From the lineout Plains carried play to Waihi’s twenty-five, and gained a penalty. Molloy’s kick was returned, Campbell centred, Morley picked up and fell over the line. Molloy succeeded in converging, plains 5, Waihi 0. From the kick-out the ball went out at half-way. Waihi sent out with a penalty kick near the comer. Dellamore failed with a kick at goal from a mark, Stretton forcing.' From the .dropiout" E. Williams carried up the field, but was stopped by Nicoll,' who found the line at half-way. Line play ensued ; unitjl Ryan broke away, to be - stopped by the Waihi backs, who returned to Molloy, the latter finding the line. Garry took a mark from the throw-in and sent out at half- ' way. Play crossed the field and a .penalty kick by Plains was followed .up, the ball going out near the corner flag. Waihi got possession and ’ kicked down, but Clarke sent ouit .at the twenty-five flag. For a knock-on ■in the lineout a scrum was ordered. Waihi hooked the ball and play went to mid;fleld. The final quarter opened with play in Waihi’s territory, the backs eventually relieving to half-way. An interchange of kicks followed, neither side gaining advantage until Rapana broke through from a Ithrow in and sent the ball not near Waihi’s comer. Della- , more cleared to half-way. Waihi with a long kick went on to Plains’ territory. but play was immediatelv returned to the pther end of the field, Dellamore forcing. A number of kicks followed the drop-out, the ball eventually being sent cut inside Waihi’s twenty-five line. From the ensuing scrum Waihi hooked, but got the ball and cleared at half-way, Ryan broke, through, and the Plains backs with the ball at their feet carried play up the field to the corner. The defence was sound and Waihi returned to halfway. After line play the ball, went out in Plains’ territory. An unsuccessful penalty kick by Dellamore was sent well up’the field by Molloy. Campbell

followed up .• and tackled Dellamor 3, the ball going out. From the line-out the Plains forwards carried on and Steedman scored. Lipscombe failed' to convert, Plains 8, Waihi 0. From the kick-off C. Stretton carried up the field and found the line. Plains gained the advantage in line play until Dellamore relieved with a long kick. With plains attacking, strongly Stretton took a drop-kick, the bap hitting the post. From the rebourid Molloy nearly got over, a five-yards scrum resulting. On the ball going out time was called. Mr J. Reid was referee. PIAKO V; PAEROA. The Piako v. Paeroa representative match took place at Te. Aroha on SaturdaV- At half-time the scores were ‘ Paeroa 6, Piako 3. D Smith (Paeroa) retired hurt. After halftime Samson (Piako) scored, and McLaren converted. Hudson (Piako) scored, but the kick failed. Piako 11. Paeroa 6. The last quarter of the game was willing, but Piako forwards were superior to Paeroa’s. The final scores were : Piako 11, Paeroa 6. THE CURTAIN-RAISER. The curtain-raiser between thirdgrade teams from Paeroa and Piako resulted in a win for Paeroa by 6 points to 0. A was scored b y C; Nield and T. Hudson converted from a mark.
