The question of further fostering trade relationships was given a good deal of consideration by Sir Thomas Mackenzie when speaking on the Ad-dress-in-Reply in the Legislative Council last week. He urged the encouragement. of closer trade relationships with the United states, saying that if the two great English-speak-ing peoples were bound by further ties it would result in indestructible peace and prosperity. Great Britain was menaced by the loss of £400,1)00,000 of trade with countries now unable to take British goods' He said that no country was more suited for the establishment of branch factories of British industries than New Zealand. In regard to preference, he hoped the Prime Minister would speak very seriously to those respoirsible for the contracts for beef with the Argentine Republic. New Zealand gave preference to English goods in her largest contracts, and it seemed a poor policy to forget it and give
support to a country that harboured 11,000 Germans during the critical days of the Falkland Islands naval battle.
