GOLD MINING.

PROTECTIVE LEGISLATION SOUGHT. A largely-signed petition from persons interested in the gold-mining industry was presented to the House of Representatives on Thursday by Mr V. H. Potter (Roskill), The petitioners asked for progressive legislation dealing with gold mining, with a view to thorough stabilisation of the industry, so that syndicates which spent large sums in exploring for gold might not have their claims jumped as soon as their capital was exhausted. Permission for tributers to work auriferous areas while prospectors are endeavouring to secure capital, and that they may be regarded as manning the ground. Rebate on all gold taken by the Government at prewar rates (£4) while open values were £5 to £6 was also sought This caused the Waihi Grand junction to show a loss of £70,000 in two years. The payment of double taxation by mining companies having head offices in London was considered unfair, and a reduction of the taxation on the industry was also sought.
