MeSweeney, al) tended ito a'successful evening’s enjoyment, which even the awful weather was unable to lessen The euchre competition was well contested, the prizewinners being Mr' McSweeney and Mr P. Shine. It -s stated that the proceeds totalled ovei £3O. PERSONALHis many friends will be glad t< learn that Mr; A. K. Alley is slowlj recovering from the effects of the serious and painful injury t.o one p his knees sustained in a recent foot ball match. Already he has been I? the Thames Hospital for over : month, and his stay there from al appearances will be somewhat pro longed. The present injury has ag gravated the severe wounds in th< legs sustained while on active service at the front. To learn that he ha! the active, as well as the passive sympathy of a large circle of friendand acquaintances should, help t< keep the invalid in good cheer. CHURCH. The Anglican Church after its threi coats of paint looks really well, thi work being finished before the Bis hop’s (Dr. Averill) visit* which was sheartily appreciated. With the re erection of the fence round the see tion, the cost of which is being gen erously defrayed by Mr A.. W. Alley the renovations will be complete. ROADS. A successful social in aid of th< painting fund in connection with St Mary’s (Anglican) Church was heli in the Hall on Tuesday night, thi organisers being Mesdames W. H Alley, G. Avery, and I. M. Murdock who had fhe capable assistance o Messrs W. H. Alley and A. R. Robin so". The weather, for a change, ui to the commencement of the functioi was favourable, so that a goodb number attended to show their prac tical sympathy with the good cause Mrs Potter supplied excellent music while Mr E. Alley acted as M.C. witl his usual efficiency. The euchre com petition attracted a large number o players, the games ending with Mr R. Lowry and Mr A. W. Alley as high est scorers. The members of the coin mittee are to be congratulated on thresult of their efforts. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At. the annual meeting of house holders seven residents were, a’ usual, elected as a school conimittei for the ensuing year, and the resat of the election duly communicated h the Board of Education. The latte bo ly pointed out that as-two had bee, elected in excess of the legal quoti another election would be necessary The chairman of the committee (M: A. R. Robinson), in reply to tin Board’s communication, pointed ou that t.he committee as elected was ii strict accord with the Act, such com mittee having jurisdiction over thi Hikutaia and the Hikutaia Wes schools. The Board admitted the ac curacy of Mr Robinson’s contention so that matters remain as they were
